rading video card?

Hiya, first time posting here hehe. Anyway, i have a 420 geforce4 mx video card. I have this that i play a lot, but sometime i get really choppy graphic in certain places. Also my CPU run at 100% whenever i play this game. SO i am wondering if i get an ati 9700 pro, will it help improve my fps and make my cpu work less harder? thanks.

Hi Jak, and welcome to the forums.

Let's back up a bit. Tell us please, the rest of your system specs. The reason I ask, is because that is a capable card, unless you're playing the most VERY recent released games, you shouldn't be having problems with games skipping unless you're playing them with the details set too high, or unless you're playing in too high resolution. You might have a problem with the speed of CPU you're running, amount of RAM memory, hard drive space, current drivers, etc.

Please post the specs of your complete system including the Operating System you're running so that we may better diagnose your problem.

In a word:

YES

The 9700 is currently about as good as it gets in gaming. The GeForce4 MX is a poor gaming card.

Hi Jak and welcome to the PC Mech forums!

Yes, it will. The MX line of cards was *never* intended as a gaming solution. The are aimed at the budget market, office and web surfing apps.

What is this game you are playing?

Yes, the ATi card will do wonders, but only if you have they system to back it up with.

Sorry i guess i should've done that in the first place. my comp is a 3ghz 1 gig ram 60 gig hardrive. The game that i play is called Everquest. I run max resolution and highest detail possible. The game isn't that memory intensive, but the expansion that came out within the last year is. so should i get the ati? thanks

You would definitely benefit from the ATI card, or even from a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 or 4600. That video card is the culprit holding you back.

Also, make sure you're using the most current Detonator drivers with it. They might help a bit.

getting a better graphics card will improve your games etc about 6 or 7 fold.

Before my Ti4200 i had a PCI Geforce 2 MX400 64MB
3DMark01 score - 2400

With my shiny new Geforce 4 Ti4200( when OC'd to Ti4400 spec)
3DMark01 score - 11000

now go get yourself a better graphics card

hey, hold up spyda, what are his system specs, because a better graphics card will make the CPU have to work harder, since it puts a bottleneck on the CPU itself. So, can you please go ahead and tell us your system specS?

HTH

The GF4 Ti series will work just fine in Everquest, the MX is terrible with settings maxed out.

wait i am a little confused here. faster video card makes my cpu work harder? so if the game is making my cpu runs at 100%, wouldn't putting in a new video card put more strain on the cpu? i am a lil confused hehe, someone enlighten me?

I think that is not true.

Since one of the points of having a faster and better vid card is to lower the strain on the CPU.

cant see how that works out, cos (if i remember reading this right) with your current card the CPU is emulating a vertex shader, whereas the 9700 has one, or even 2 i cant remember.
The card has a better GPU so it takes some of the work off the CPU.

I think what easyco was trying to say is, that if it was a crappy computer with low specs, that the CPU would try to keep up with the graphics card. but on your system, the CPU is waaaaaay faster. so it doesnt matter

but i dont think you need a 9700, a Ti4200 would make your computer slick

I have a customer who both he and his kid are EQ freaks - he has a P4-2.53 with a Ti4400, the kid has a T-bird 1.2/266 with a Ti4200, they both are very happy. Before we upgraded them, they had unlocked and overclocked DDR Radeon LE's which were just awful in EQ, so bad they were going link dead.

Perhaps he doesn't need it for the tasks that he's doing right now. But it is still wise to invest in one for the tasks that are coming.

Always think for the future. Unless you enjoy upgrading components every 6 months.

Always aim your sights as higher as you can. That is my philosophy. For life and for computers.

Jak, if you have the money, go for it!

I think it's all the games fault. The games like Everquest,Morrowind and few others that will choke even on highest end CPU or GPU....even setting low res or detail wouldn't even help.
I tend to go dizzy with a low fps games..
