Hi allCompaq and micro cant help this one. Was instructed by compaq to refresh to factory settings becasue of an issue. Since then i cannot install or even play a disc, music or otherwise. The system closes down, with the error message that I have caused an excemption? |

You could very well be looking at a defective CDROM drive.
First place to check is device manager and see what is being reported for that drive.. Perhaps is it not the original drive that came with the PC?? You can try to remove it from device manager and reboot and let windows reload the drivers for the drive> |

I had a problem very similar to this with my son's PC. The CDROM drive would crash the computer when accessed. I moved it to the primary IDE chain as a slave, and it worked just fine. Try moving it to a different IDE chain. Make it slave to the HDD, or put it on IDE 2 if it is already slave to the HDD.
Also, chances are this is a Windows problem, and your drive might work in DOS mode for you to use the factory restore disc. |
