Video lockup during games

Only during my games, it freezes for 5-10 sec at a time. Recent ones like C&C generals, Madden 2003, and the Black Hawk demo. Weird triangle shapes in purple and green form and disappear too. I turned down all to low detail and dropped my hardware acceleration down 1 notch. Still the same. I'm thinking it's my vid card, or not enough power to system.

Winxp pro
geforce 4600
2 120gb, 1 80gb hard drives
DVD burner
DVD-ROM
Promise tx2000
3 USB and 4 USB on hub devices
4 case fans
430W PS

Do you have the latest drivers for your hardware? (motherboard and video card)
Latest detonator drviers?
DirectX 8.2? (or even DirectX 9, since you say these are new games)

thanks for the info. did check all drivers and were new. did guess that the weird colored triangle shapes during games might be vid card. Swapped it with a geforce 2 and probs are gone. Better look for the warranty now

Yes,

RMA the card.

Just out of interest, what brand of card and motherboard?

I think I'm screwed on the card. It's a visiontek and their bankruptcy plus the fact that their site only shows ATI stuff means I get stuck w/out a RMA. My mobo is Asus A7N8X and runs well.

Possible Cause

The fact that you updated your drivers could actually be the problem. Not to long ago I was running a GF card when I still had my old system. I never had any trouble with video until I upgraded to Detanator drivers, and then Porche Unleashed started doing exactly what your describing. I reverted back to the old drivers and all was normal again. Some of my buddies have had various issues with detanator drivers too. Just to give you something to chew on. Good luck!

Yeah not to forget the darn AGP transfer rate .......2X or 4X.
I got myself into this mess for 2 years( i'm not kidding ).
When finally I realized that 4X just gives a lot of ****( freezing or somethin) 2x runs silky smooth.

That's a good idea, I used Detonator 41.09 from December and maybe I'll try 41.03 from October. Gues I could also try a beta driver 42.90 from earlier this week.

You could also try the 2 or 3 series drivers too.

Thanks to all for responses. I tried 42.90 w/ no success. Then 31.80 driver from Nov., which during the test crashed me to destop and had a hardware failure error and crashed me to black screen with flashing cursor. At least I know what the prob was.

And re-inserting my Geforce 2 still runs smoothly. Luckily, a friend offered me a cheap ATI 9700 pro recently.

I was just about to call to see if Visiontek would still rma the card and I noticed the fan wasn't spinning. Apparently a PCI card right below it stuck the fan and the chip was getting hot. I've tested it w/ Sept. drivers and it seems fine. Updating to new drivers and see if everything's smooth.
