Geforce mx 400 tv/out

Hey, I recently broke my old Geforce mx 200, so i thought i'd replace it with a cheapy & bought the next one up geforce 2 mx 400 ). I thought it would be perfect, but its caused so many problems i'd rather be using the pci 1mbyte one i was using untill it arrived. Anyway I installed it worked as I expected no better than the original, well next day when i restart my pc from boot up ( properly not a restart) it crashed bout 20 times on the screen just after the windows xp logo, when it reads the disc drives it whirls up then whirls down & shuts off. Well i managed sort tht out , some driver or somet, next problem is when i turn it on in morning it goes to 4 bit colour & 640 resolution, .....well tht was easy to sort out the first time it happened, i unistalled the drivers & they were reinstalled automaticaly the next time i booted, & worked fine. The next day ( this morning i think) well did the usual colour thing & i tryed my unistall trick but this time it beat me & crashed & then when booting it went all cuckoo after the checking harddrive screen , ( mixed up picture) i managed to fix it after going on safemode thing & worked eventually, anyway all i get now is random freezin for no reason. I havent had one for an hour i'd say but b4 i had 1 every 10 mins after i restarted. Long winded I knw but can anyone help...... cheers

hi again, this morning when i booted it did the dodgy colour thing again, though it sorted easily with just needing to unistall & reinstall. I'm just wondering why though, doesn't anyone know?? Or at least have an idea, could it be a dodgy virus or something?

I would maybe guess that the problem is maybe with your system, in some way or another. I have that same video card (GeForce2 MX400 64MB agp NVIDIA) and I'm also running winXP, and I let win install whatever driver it wanted when I put it in my system, so no other special drivers, and my computer runs real smooth.

Did you try loading the drivers in safe mode? I had to do that with my Radeon in order to install it correctly.

erm depends i think i installed it in all manners possible, it just seems it can't save its settings or something, as it returns to tht 4bit, & on the screen where you choose the colour, there is no other settings, I've found the latest drivers for the card download them but XP says access denied or something stupid when I try to install them. My system hasn't crashed today, so I'm not too bothered just when i turn it on for first time in a day, so maybe it has a short term memory or somet :P

Do you have the right drivers installed for your monitor?

I really dont think that driver(s) for your monitor would cause any kind of problem for you, there really not that importent, plug n play type monitor usually works for almost all of them.

well i turned it on this morning & I got above seven restarts before it booted fully, i didn'y mind as for once the colour was 32bit & usual resolution. The restarts are like before just after the XP logo, it whirls up as it reads the cd & dvd drives then they go quiet & you see a glimpse of a blue screen, blue screen being one i don't see on XP but saw a lot of on win 98 the error screen, it has writing on it but its too fast to read(EVIL EVIL) Then it restarts, the only way you can avoid this is by resetting on the windows logo b4 you reach the cd reading part, then it will go to the checking drive for errors & will or has usually started from there. ( though most the time no errors are found )

i used to get driver errors for that card all the time, it would crash at least once a day due GF2 MX400 driver errors/conflicts.

i just put up with it because there was nothing more i could do to make it stop doing it.
Thankfully my GF4 has had no such trouble whatsoever

lol, well i don't have the money to buy a geforce 4, I'm sure there has to be a way of clearing it up bcuz my geforce 2 mx 200 didnt do anything wrong, but i've noticed GAINWARD seem to own the rights to geforce mx 400 for some reason my old one was creative, & gainward seem to be very amateur look at their Uk website it isn't even running yet. http://www.gainward.net/

have u tried the latest detonator drivers, that might solve your problem and i agree that installing them in safe mode would be better, i would delete the old ones in safe mode too...

I'd look at getting the card exchanged. So far everyone has overlooked the very real possibility that the card is defective.

Run Detonator Destroyer to remove all the old drivers first. You should run it while in safe mode.

If your card is not made by gainward then do not use their drivers. They make some great cards especially the golden sample ones. My overclocked gainward GF2 MX 400 w/tv out GS has been a solid card for over a year now. There is nothing wrong with GF2 MX 400 cards.

Look for some BIOS tweaks for your board and make sure you have nothing set wrong in the BIOS.

You have a huge selection of nvidia drivers you can download from http://www.reactorcritical.com/download.shtml

Sometimes when you uninstall the old drivers they do not get completly uninstalled. Is this the problem you are having?

Here are a couple links that can help you trouble shoot the problem if the card is good.
Geforce FAQ Gold and another GF FAQ
