Im new, so thanks in advance for any help you all provide me.
I have a k6-2 475mhz IBM with 128 mb ram and a OEM ATI Rage Pro 8mb video card(I think its only a 64bit card). Its having some jerkyness in some of my games. Recently I installed Tiger Woods PGA Tour collection, and when the screen pans left to right quickly it gets really jerky. I want to upgrade my video, but this stupid board has no AGP slot, the agp video is onboard and there is no slot. So I guess my only options are to upgrade the board (maybe a ASUS A7V with new v card) or go to a PCI video card. Im wondering if I will see a worthwhile performance increase going from a useless AGP video card to a good performer in PCI. Will a good(Great) PCI card give me noticably better performance than the run-of-the-mill AGP card I have? Thanks.
PS: I need a web page to learn about simple stuff like just who are the big players in video card making these days, and general stuff about their current product lines. Like I read somewhere that 3dfx didnt include a feature called "onboard T&L" on their new cards and so the newer nVidia based cards are better because of this. That kind of basic info is another thing I need to learn. Thanks alot.

It should be OK to add a V3 3000 PCI video card to your computer because on my first PC which was a E Tower 300 and I added a PCI TNT 1.

BTW. Make sure that you can disable the on-board AGP video before you go out and buy the V3.

The economical choice is to get yourself a Voodoo 3 PCI card or a Voodoo 2 (or a pair of them running in Scan Line Interleave mode). I used a pair of Diamond Monster 3D 2s for a long time. I've still got them in a drawer somewhere as a matter of fact... not being used.

The progressive choice is to do a system upgrade, buying either a new Super Socket 7 motherboard or upgrading to a newer motherboard and CPU. I'd suggest the new mobo and CPU if money permits... SS7 is almost dead.

Yeah. If money permits do what TireT says. If not, get a Voodoo 3

Chipset?

Ok, I guess you think that even a PCI card with what is considered good capabilities is better than my run of the mill AGP card. I think that this means that currently Im coming up against a card limit and not an AGP/CPU limit on my system, so a better PCI card (even with the limitations of PCI) is a noticable step up from the video card limitation I have now? Is this about right?
Also, the Voodoo cards are made by 3DFX, right? Is Voodoo also the name of the GPU/chipset that is on the card? Is a Diamond Monster 3d 2 a Voodoo based card, but from a different manufacturer(Diamond)? Thanks alot for help!

The old Voodoo 1 and 2 cards were just accelerators, not full video cards. They were sold as a chipset as well, so other manufacturers made them. Yes, the chipsets on the Voodoo 1's and 2's are 3dfx, and the Voodoo3 cards are manufactured by 3dfx.

As far as AGP/PCI, speed differences only show up in high resolutions, say 1280 x 1024 @ 32 bit and higher, which few people use due to the slowness anyways. At 1024 x 768 and lower in 16 bit color, there's no noticeable difference in speed between AGP and PCI.
