AGP x8 Is It Worth It?

After reading different reviews comparing AGP x4 to AGP x 8 cards (same type of card) it appears that this offers a very small performance increase not really worth bothering about. The only reason I ask is that I am after a new graphics card, but my motherboard does not support AGP x8, so to get the benefit (if there is any) I would also have to upgrade my motherboard to AGP x8. Which to me seems stupid, but maybe I am not that clued up regarding this?

Don't worry about upgrading the motherboard yet just for 8x AGP. Upgrade it when you feel ready. 8x AGP offers almost no performance increase yet, so it just isn't worth spending another $100 for a few more FPS.

If you were buying a new motherboard today, I would say to go ahead and get it. Although it has not shown anything yet, it is only a matter of time. But if you are not out of date to the point that it makes sense to upgrade the MOBO and CPU don't waste the money yet.

I heard someone say (I think it was glc) that 8x only helps at resolutions larger than 1024x768.

As far as games are concerned, there is no advantage between 4x and 8x at the moment. So I suggest spending the money on a faster 4x card (with a faster clock speed and Ram) than a slower 8x card.

If the card you look at is fast, at the right price, and just happens to support 8x, then that's fine. But don't let the 8x feature control your final decision.

By the time games are using anything like 2.1GB/s bandwidth, provided by AGP 3.0 and 8x offer, you'll be due for a video card and mobo upgrade anyway. Games haven't even reached the 1.06GB/s bandwidth offered by 4x yet.

But we live in hope.
