Dear Anyone Who Reads This:
I have been recently having problems with getting an old game, Baldur's Gate, to work on my computer. I am running Windows XP and I know this is an older game, but I never had problems before back when I bought this computers components. Here is the problem to its fullest extent that I can describe. I installed Baldur's Gate one day deciding to play it once again. Not even 5 minutes into the game it would crash sending me to the blue error screen reading: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL No other file names or anything. This persisted and I wasnt having any other trouble with other games or programs unless I was running them for long periods of time. I took my computer in and had someone look at it and they told me it was fine. The problem persisted still so I was able to conclude I had bad RAM. I traded the RAM in and bought an extra 512 MB stick just for kicks. Well I reinstalled the computer many times to get the right configurations and upgrades and had the computer working perfect. I was ready to install new software and games. I installed Baldur's Gate..... Didnt work again. I installed Quake 3 Arena.... Didnt work. Now please dont tell me it is because my system is so new. I have had Starcraft installed on this computer since I have had it and NEVER had problems. I still get the same blue error message over and over. I have tried program compatibility, updates, patches, advice from support techs with software companys, and so on. If anyone can help me, please do! I apologize for the length of the letter! Thanks, Michael J. Kovis Frusterated User

That is very likely, many games simply don't run at all without the old Win 16-32 FAT bases.

AK, I'm gonna try to install BG tomorrow on my XP Pro system. I'll tell you what comes out.

Make sure you don't have any IRQ conflicts. Also get the VIA 4 in 1 drivers, as VIAARENA.COM says it has problems with creative sound cards I think.
Hope that helps! |

Shouldn't need VIA drivers with XP.... Also, if I remember right, the VIA / SB think was only for early revs, like the 133 chipset and only on certain mobos... Before installing VIA drivers, double check their Web site to see if they are needed for a particular setup.

Yup, the Creative issue was only with the K133 chipset.

Maybe the 4-in-1s aren't 'needed', but I've fixed many a problem with a VIA-based board and XP by installing the latest 4-in-1s.

Correct. The 4in1s weren't needed when XP came out. But since then there has been many updates so I also think that it would be advisable to update them.

Hi Acid-Klutch,
Thank you for your PM: Quote:
2) I did not tell you what you could or could not do. 3) When people here help others, it is not fair to them to have to switch between multiple threads to keep track of all the answers and to figure out what is going on. It's bad Etiquette. 4) I just happened to be the person that mentioned your multiple posts as a courtesy to any forum member to read one of them. If it wasn't me, it would have been someone else. 5) Maybe you should read the forum guidlines before you start up with it. Here is a quote from it: Quote:

Hey guys....
Still having problems. Dont know what to do. There are so many reasons why I get this error message of "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and why I cant run any programs for more than five minutes or so. It is crazy! Gonna try pulling my RAM out and using it in different spots and one piece at a time. And by the way I PM'ed Tworails back. I didnt know I couldnt post multiple threads. But I am recieving good feedback! Thanks again |

A friend of mine just received that error when turning off his PC. And he does not know of this game nor do he have it on his computer.
What point am I trying to make? Well, that maybe the culprit is some WinXP service or proggie running in the background. You can find out how many and what programs are running if you do the 3 finger salute (Ctrl+Alt+Del) once. To find out what proggies are starting along with Win you can go to Start > Run > there you type msconfig and then click on the start tab to see who are starting along with Win. Regarding tracking services, uhm, that won't be easy and I dunno how to help u there. |

Right-click My Computer>Manage>Services and Applications>Services. A great reference on what the different Services are can be found at http://www.blkviper.com/.

Hi Acid-Klutch,
Got your PM and replied... I'm not that good at XP, but doing some searching on the problem, I found some possible items: AntiVirus programs (especially McAfee) can cause this: did you try disabling it? Upgrading to XP over Win 98 or ME can cause this: did you do a clean install, or install over an existing OS? Here's a Link that may help... ... and maybe Here And, of course, I found the usual it could be drivers and or memory and or software problems.... Hopefully some of the above may be of help... TO EVERYONE!
Guess what? I decided to see if I had another bad stick of RAM. When all of this started that is what I thought my problem was. I exchanged the bad piece for another and bought one more stick of 512 DDR. Well... I pulled one piece out and checked to see if my programs would run. Sure as s#$* (stuff, hehe) my games and programs werent crashing. So then I took the other stick and tried it by itself. And lo and behold that worked too! So I put both in nice and tight and everything should be fine. Seemed good to me so far! Hopefully my troubles are over! Thanks everyone! Appreciate the good help! So simple of a problem! All this trouble! :-D Thanks again! Michael J. Kovis mistafiget@aol.com |

I am starting to wonder that this could be a VIA problem. As I got the same error message with Windows XP and Windows 2000 and I am running VIA KT333 chipset.
Replaced the stick of RAM, and the problem was solved. But this time, it must mean something else. |

I don't think VIA is problem, as the problem is not restricted to VIA only motherboards... Intel systems can have the same problem.

Definitely not the VIA drivers. From what I have researched I have noticed that they have corrected everything within the new 4in1 drivers that you may download at VIAarena.com. Also I noticed that I DO have a bad stick of RAM and now I should be ok. Going to return it tomorrow and complain to the place where I bought my computer components! hehe. Wish me luck guys and girls!

HAHAHA!!! Tech replaced motherboard and AGP card. My video cards fan was not working. Upgraded to Ti4200 GeForce4 and the motherboard was shot. Got a Asus nForce chipset driven motherboard. Very nice!
