Fixed IP Address?
I am thinking of going for a broadband connection, and a slightely cheaper option is offered without a fixed IP address. I can't think of any instance I would need this, although would it affect being able to be a host server in some multiplayer games?

It does affect being able to host multiplayer games, but not in a big way. The only difference is that to host the games, you'll need to go into your modem and open certain ports, so other people can connect to your computer. You can find the correct port number and procedure on the games website. I know I had to open a port to host Warcraft III games.

you do need broadband for lag-free games. dail-up is just too slow. you should be able to support about 6-8 players depending on game type. you dont need Static IP (fixed ip). Most games have in-game browsers or gamespy compatibility. you can just find the server by name. Static IP is only needed for web servers.
I have dynamic IP and it hasnt changed in 3 months because i use my pc about 16hr/day.

Hi wintomato,
A dynamic IP just means that you get a new address each time you go online. The connection is the same. I kinda prefer the dynamic because of security: nobody can make repeated attempts to hack you simply because they know where you are. Each time you log on, they'd have to find you again, which is next to impossible. Of course, it doesn't stop the potential from a random hack attempt. TwoRails |

My cable service used to have a static IP (when it was @home), but now it is dynamic. The thing is, I've had the same IP for 6 months straight. Even after unplugging the cable modem a few times.

Yeah, AT&T is weird like that. Only time my IP changed was when I got a new computer, and even now it hasn't changed.

This is all good news. I will go for the cheaper connection option which will save me about £10 uk sterling a month.
The dynamic IP address option was about the only thing I thought would affect me, otherwise the download and upload rates are the same. thanks guys. I'll let you know when I'm connected full time, otherwise I'll just be using work's connection before and after hours. |
