Talking GTA3 & Unreal 2 PROBLEMS!

ARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

*ahem* well, iv just installed these to games on to my shiney new build PC, and all im getting in greif, heres the details:

GTA3 - When i play the game, it just crashes or freezes after just a few seconds of play, the menus fine and stuff, and iv tried running it a 640-480 up to 1024-784 in both 32 and 16 bit colour and still i get the same problem, either the same hangs with the sound still runnin for a second or two and then switches to windows, or i get a blue screen of death flashing on the screen and my pc restarts!!!

Unreal 2 - Well, pretty similar as GTA3 however the game just exits and comes up with a general protection fault and the following message-

History: FD3DInternalState::Commit::Textures <- FD3DInternalState::Commit <- FD3DRenderInterfaceawPrimitive <- FStaticMeshBatchList::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FPlayerSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngineaw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop

and as with GTA3 iv tried it with lower graphics and stuff and also Iv installed the latest Direct X and also the latest nVidia Drivers but the make it worse as other games i have such as Mafia seem to crash too! this is really doin my head in!

argh!! ANY HELP or idea on how to solve this will be MUCH APPRECIATED!

heres the spec of my machine:

AMD 1400 Thunderbird
Jetway 663AS Ultra
768MB PC133 RAM
80Gb IBM 7200RPM
Geforce 2 MX400
Sound Blaster Live

i dont know the specs for U2 but i think a gf2 mx 400 is a wee bit too old to get it running. i have the same vidcard and its too light for many newer games.

for GTA, ive played it myself and its a bug hell and bad console port put together in my opinion. it worked for me but out of 4 installs, only one time it worked without shocking and stutting all the time.
it should work on that machine though.
does it crash after you started the game or after you go "in-mission"?
have you checked the gta 3 forums? when the game was still new many pple posted having all kinds of problems
Do you use winXP ? it has many issues with this game. Have you tried upgrading the game ?

My first guess is the video card. Those are intense games for a simple card like that.... For Unreal you need 128 MB of video ddr RAM. You're looking at a GeF4 (non-MX) or a Radeon 8500 or higher.

not necessarily the graphics card, my brother on his
PIII 1G
GF2MX400
256MBPC133
computer runs these games (except Unreal 2) and more all day long without a problem.

maybe you have a windows problem that would be easily sorted if you installed windows again, or maybe a virus.

ahhhh. well, i think it mustve bin the graphics card as i swapped it for a 64MB Herules Prophet 4500 and all is well, even unreal 2 (however to run that game i need to turn the graphics down)...

and as for gta3, it runs very well even at 1200 x 1024 but i like to play it at 800 x 600 just to make sure i dont get any unwanted crashes!

now all i need to do it sort out the cooling on my CPU and in my case, DoH!

Gaming questions, ask me...

GTA 3: Video card is the obvious, along with a fast CPU which I see you have. Also, if you're using XP, there is a certain patch that you NEED to have installed for GTA3 to work correctly.

Unreal 2: Dumb question, but I have to ask - is this a copy? If not and seeing your system can and should handle w/o a problem, I would seriously call Legend/Epic's tech support or check their forums. Buying a new game is much like buying a new car on its first model run year. Wait until the bugs have been worked out.

Please keep me posted for I document these issues and submit them to forums worldwide...

we just tested unreal 2 on my friends
athlon 1200. originally he had a creative geforce 4 mx 440 or something in it and unreal 2 wouldnt even run. (like i expected) . yesterday he installed a brand new hercules radeon 9500 pro.
(4x agp abit mobo dont know exact type)
Now the game runs smoother than hell with quite high graphic settings .
i think if you want u2 to run at high graphic settings a 128mb ddr vidcard will be a minimum.

My boys are running Unreal 2 on a Athlon XP 1800+, 256MB DDR, Geforce2 MX (64MB), at "medium" settings with no problems.

You've just got to tone down the textures and lighting.

I use a Geforce Ti4800 (64MB) and can run the game at full settings with no problems.

Mike, thanks. Your boy's system is the exact same type of system I am building for myself, only with a 128MB video card. At least now I know that U2 will run smooth on it.

why didnt you just get a ti4*00 to start off with, you could have bought one with the money spent on the 4500 and the ti200, which are in my opinion, not all that good gaming cards

IMO, you're better of with an ATI or Powered by ATI card...

Yes, upgrade your video card and the problem should be solved. UT2 needs a very good video card.

If you started a new thread for this problem (which is best not to do), then we should not respond technically to your problems in this one anymore. It is too confusing.
Could you please post the url to that thread here so if we have any technical input we can keep it all in one place? Thanks.

its not the graphics card my brothers!!! trust me. coz my 2 friends has the same graphics card as "djdannylee" does but GTA3 runs smooth. actually their memory is only 256mb PC133 only so its definitely the graphics card. check your system for some leaks. virus may cause this also. on UT its the graphics card i think.

hey too many people here always tell others to upgrade their pc's even if the problem is not that serious. why not try to find other ways on helping one another rather than making them problematic on their situation.

the only times i have seen people say upgrade your graphics card is when they are complaining if slow play or having rubbish graphics etc and it is down to having a low end graphics card.
There is only one way to rectify this, get a better graphics card. plain and simple

How about AGP aperture settings? What are those set at? Set yours at 128 MB. That might fix it.
