Pissed Lag Spikes in Multiplayer Games

Here are my comp stats:
Athlon 2600+
1 gig pc3200 ddr
120 gig hd
EPOX 8RDA+ nFORCE2 mobo
XP Pro SP1
geFORCE MX440 8x agp ddr

Now heres the problem:
I'll be playing in a game, for example Counter-Strike(but any online game for that reason) and all of a sudden the lag will spike to a hefty 1200. I am on 1.5mb cable. I have no firewall but a router and my comp is on the DMZ. So what the heck to I do?

I'd contact your broadband provider. Your computer isn't the problem OR it may have just been the CS server you were connected to at the time...

Have you tweaked the game settings? For example, what's your rate in your CS config? Broadband should be at least 5000, mine is set to 9999. Also, have you checked for things running in the background? NAV loves to wait until you're right in the middle of a game to go get some updates, lol.
