Boom Motion Sickness from Games

Hi all,
I read a review of Unreal II a while back and two of the reviewers mentioned horrible motion sickness from the game. That reminded me of when I thought I had gotten sick from Jedi Outcast II. Do any of you guys experience this from games? If not, what do you think could be cause this?

Also, I noticed that when all of the lights are off except for my monitor, it is the worst!

I used to when I started with FPSs. But once you get used to it everything else follows.

When I stopped playing FPSs for a time because I was too busy with strategy games or action games that used isometric perspective (like Crusader), the next time I played an FPS I ended up with a monster headache.

Weird thing that not all FPSs give me headaches. For example, I don't remember HL giving me one, but the demo of Blood 2 certainly did.

Never experienced any sickness from playing any type of game.

I'm not sure if there's a connection or not, but... do you guys also get car sick?

Only game that ever gave me a headache or made me dizzy was way back when they came out with Descent. All that 360° movement through those underground mines just bugged the hell out of my eyes.

Yea! I used to get real sick when I rode in the back of our family van. I used to have to sit in the front because of it. I guess I am just motion sickness prone.

Wow, I didn't think one would get motion sickness from a video game. Do the people who get motion sickness get vertigo too?

This is not intended as a slight on people who get motion sickness, just a question out of curiosity.

i apologize in advance.

I sometimes get headaches after starting at the screen to long. Is that considered motions sickness? I've had mild car sickness once or twice, just a bit of any upset stomach, could have been a coincidence.

It's worse if you're running a low refresh rate. As long as it's 80+, then it doesn't bother me that much (and that's playing Desert Combat, flying F16/Mig29 fighters at full speed and such ).

The only time I've gotten myself remotely disoriented was trying to pull an inverted split-S in that game with one of the old WW2 planes, my head kinda blurred for a second as the horizon turned on me and I nose-dived it, blammo!

After reading up on the old WW2 air combat tactics it turns out that only a few pilots ever tried doing that maneuver, since it would cause them to black out and crash at the last second like I did, go figure .

I know that a low framerate can cause motion sickness. I think headaches are more from eyestrain and nauseau from motion sickness.

I remember when I started playing Doom I got motion sickness the first times around. But I get used to it pretty quickly.

However several of my friends who watched me play (and who didn't play at the computer) admitted to have gotten dizzy from watching my screen while I moved.

Yesterday, a friend came to my store and watched me play NWN... he got dizzy after 2 minutes of it!

I get dizzy playing Deus Ex, I don't know why. It doesn't happen with any other game.

Same with me. I used to play FPS games constantly, including Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament and Wolfenstein with nary a problem. Then a took a break from them to get in on some RTS Starcraft games. I went back to UT2K3 the other day, and I had to stop after 20minutes. My head was swimming.

i got a friend who gets sick from playing any FPS. i think hes got a weak belly. one thing that would help for anyone who gets sick is to get a LCD moniter they are much easier to look at for long periods of time.

when i work on a paper i get massive headaces, a friend of mine who studies to be a optitian tells me it's from having to adjust my eyes all the time between paper and screen, a lcd gives less light and therefo makes you les seceptable for headaces, (his tip is :"when using a crt monitor always have an other light sorce in the room, preferably a more powerfull one) however motion sickness comes from having your eyes tell you you move and your feeling tell you you stand still (or the other way round) therefor an lcd or tft screen should not help against motion sickness. however there might be psychsomatic effects at work here.
in reality the only things you can do in my experience about motion sickness is stop playing the game, or play the game a lot, so you get used to it

my girlfriend gets sick watching me play games, but when she plays, the effect is not as bad. i think everything going on on the screen overwhelms her, but when she has one thing to conecntrate on, she does pretty good.

Happens the same thing to me with games with outdated graphics, like the original Doom and Heretic. My brain has gotten used to high res graphics by now. And I can't stand chunky graphics at 320x240 and 256 colors!

My tummy does backflips on a couple of the jumps in GTAIII and Vice City. Or if I bail from a helicopter. You just fall for ever.

mikeheitz, that isn't really motion sickness, its just the game tricking your brain into thinking YOU are falling. Motion sickness is getting headaches, naseau etc. from video games.

My uncle has to literally get up and leave the room when I start paying games like Devil May Cry or Resident Evil - The panaraming camera angles give him a massive headache, and he starts to get all whiney so I tell to go take a nap

I get carsick when I try and concentrate on something while Im in a car, like reading or playing my GB...kills me...

physical discomfort from video games is not unheard of. there was a study a while back that (http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/videofrm.html) showed that ~5% of epilepsy sufferers are susceptible to video induced seizures. other issues, like headaches, eye strain and motion sickness are fairly common
(anecdotal evidence is here: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/a...003216,00.html and http://www.gamingillustrated.com/vid...e_sickness.php).

The only problems with the Devil May Cry I/II camera I have is with it always being in the worst possible spot! ;)
