I played Counter Strike one day online at a friends house. I liked it a lot and decided to get it. Now once i have it... I cant get on any mutiplayer games because I havent downloaded the newest update for the game. Although.. when I tried I got really confused on how to correctly install the updates.... can someone please give me detailed step by step directions to do this? Ive tried following their directions on their site.. but no luck... any help would be appreciated!
I cant wait to get started...

Give me CS or give me death!
Counter Strike is a mod of Half Life. It uses the HL software engine. So first you have to upgrade your HL engine. Then you upgrade the CS version to the latest.
It appears you have bought the retail version (if not, tell me how you got yours and we'll take it from there) so go to this site below and download hl1110.exe and install it. Then go back to the site and download cs1005.exe and install. Then I would download and install the two CS mappacks ret_pack.exe and cs_mappack.exe. Then, happy fraggin!

whr2006, you downloaded the 1009 to 1110 update. This only upgrades the 1009 version, and the retail that you bought is something lower, given the failed update. You want to download the one underneath of that, which is 82megs. Once HL is updated get the CS 1005.exe that is 116megs. HTH

ok it seems you got the retail version so you absolutely DON'T need the HL patch, only cs1005.exe (115mo) and a file called ret_pack.exe (13mo, you can find it on www.counter-strike.net) because the reatail pack didn't included all the necessary files.

That system is plenty fast for CS... Are you sure you're joining servers with good ping times?

Have you tried updating your video card drivers? Also... I almost forgot, there seems to be a problem with poor frame rates when using ATI cards with Half Life mods. Particularly the "economy" cards such as the 7000. Try updating your video card drivers, get the latest version of DirectX, and any other drivers you might be able to think of for your hardware (ie motherboard chipset drivers). Then try running Counter Strike in OpenGL mode and also DirectX mode. See which one gives you the best results.
