Review: C&C Generals

I know that this question has been going on for a while and i finally got the issue of PCGamer with the reviews for CC: Generals

77% - Good

Highs: Wild and Carnage-filled battles; well-designed units; awesome graphics

Lows: No real story; some balance issues; poor multiplayer interface; connectivity snags.

Bottom Line: If you can get past the lack of polish and story, you'll enjoy the game itself.

I just played the first few levels in the last days and the graphics are indeed awesome ! even the civilians and little thingies like that look and move great.
Esp the explosions are fantastic.

i 'm not too far in the game off course, but it seems like the story is somewhat the same like in most of these games . It connects the levels (somewhat ) to each other. It hasn't bothered me so far anyway.

I think i'd give it a little higher personal score (like 83 or so)

Good game. Great graphics. I've never been a fan of Westwood's RTS', but this one is cool. The game is a big time system hog, though. I've had to turn off a lot of the graphical goodies to get it to run smoothly on my system. When I upgrade my vid card this summer, I'll probably play it some more.

i run it at 1027*768 with all rest to highest on my athlon 2200, gf4ti4200 128mb
never had any performance problems.

I can imagine it ll run a lot worse on slower systems, it is quite graphical intense and all

i wonder if it ll run on my other duron 800, gf2mx200 64mb. if so , i can do a little home lan with my friends :-)

Thumbs up

I'm a huge RTS fan and played Generals for the first time at a LAN party a couple days back. It is a very very good game, but we had two out of three LAN games disconnect on us, dunno if it's like that for anybody else.

I play it on 3 machines here at the house, and haven't had the disconnects you mentioned. Is there a possibility of a bad network component or cable?

I doubt it, BF 1942, Counter-strike, and black hawk down all worked with no problems

I just ordered my copy of the game.

@ Gjc856: Does it disconnect without error messages?

Does it happen only in LAN games or also in intenet ones?

Yes, error messages pop up, don't remember what they say, i've only played it on LAN but we all lost connection at once, so i'd say it probably has something to do with the LAN or maybe the host comp.

Could be.

You can try using another computer as host and see if the problem repeats.

If you need more help this is the place to ask.

My friend plays this game, C & C: Generals on his AMD Athlon XP 1700+ based PC but it occassionally "freezes" at times. What could be the culprit? He runs the game on WinXP Pro with SP1. The rig has 256MB DDR memory modules, and uses a GF2 MX-400 64MB video. The resolution for the game is set at 800 x 600.

He also has other games including MOHAA and Apache, but they do run without problems.

I'll check his version, Corosus. Hope it's 8.1.

I also have browsed in C & C: Generals FAQs concerning playing the game on systems having VIA chipset-based mainboards. It does have issues regarding occassional "crashes." They suggest to download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers. His mobo by the way is an Epox 8KHAL+.

Okay, got it, Direct X version is 8.1

I have updated the driver of the VIA board to 4.43v and no more "freezes." At first, I tried with the latest VIA 4-in-1 Hyperion. It made the problem worst. It can't load the game. So, I switched to an older driver download I had [that's the 4.43v] and surprisingly it solved the problem.

It is true, the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers available does not really solve problems. You really have to try with older versions. I don't know if VIA will ever have this "rectified." Latest drivers should be designed to solve problems. No wonder in this forum some guys would advise you to stay away from VIA.

yes the error you experience in play is called the LAN mismatch error its when they are out of sync theres quite a few bugs in the multiplayer system but what it comes down to is some get lucky some don't
