Now time to post all info on future of gaming. Here's one- pc games shifting from cd's to dvd's. But I'm not sure about the first game though. My bro bought a MGS2 substance DVD for the pc-it work but my 3d card is a bit slow. Other info on gaming?

PC's still using CD's cuz they are so cheap. they could compress the data even more possibly. Thats why comps still on cd's though. You wouldnt need to fiddle with all three cd's, let's say, to play a game after installing, and the files just explode onto your HDD.

With the coming of desktop 64bit cpus, os's and all else, photorealistic games should not be theory only. You could look into my eyes before you put a bullet in one in game, and that's ok cuz I will shoot back
.... can't wait should be cool. Hopefully not too expensive either. After that, I expect something that supercedes/bypasses the common senses, stimulating the brain directly in virtual reality in its final sense. You will be in the game, not playing it. Hopefully there won't be physical repercussions from such activities. Kinda like in the movie Brainwaves... or whatever it is called. Hopefully games improve on the gameplay side and not just graphics, though.
The last couple of years have been very slow for "good" games, there haven't really been many. Alot of people thought UT was better than UT2003. Doom3 is looking to be single player/co-op focused, so the next ID fps is a long time off. Everyone is trying to make an MMORPG now, instead of a game in which players can host their own servers and mod the games themselves, BF1942 however fun it is is the most recent example of a hybrid between these two types of game, in which the company that develops it is trying to churn out expansion packs and isn't releasing their map editor to the public until they've finished reselling the game from all indications. That and the fact that most of these MMORPGs coming out just aren't very good games at all, they're rehashed versions of Everquest and Ultima Online with new graphics (or different graphics ala Star Wars Galaxies, i.e. Everquest with Wookies on top of it ).The problem is since games have a gaming press, they have access to marketing. They can spend their money on producing some nice looking screenshots for Gamespy, IGN, and some magazines, and forget about how the game itself plays. We were better off before there were fanboys and websites/magazines that cater to them :\. |

Agree with Xayd. Unreal 2 and Red Factiion 2 were both disappointments.
(Although I thought the multiplayer aspects of RTCW and MOHAA were pretty good. ) and the Serious Sam games were notable advancements in the genre- with the huge levels and over the top action. Something else that makes me wonder about the future of gaming is that good FPS games don't sell that well. Look at the top 10 lists for games. The top games are usually things like "Who wants to be a Millionaire", 'Deer Avenger", or 'Barbie's Riding Stable". Given this, are PC ports of console games, like RF 2, going to become more of the norm? I hope not. Have we reached the limit of FPS gaming? The newer games look better than the older ones- but the gameplay is pretty much the same (for single player). |

Better pixel depth and creativity. i think we'll see better bit mapping and texture detail. Polygons will be put on hold for a while. meanwhile, textures and lighting will be the most talked about aspects of a game... The T-Rex in Jurrassic park only had 300,000 polygons (but im sure many of you knew that)!

Hey guys,
I agree with Xayd for the most part. Most games coming out now are just older games with new textures and changed dialog and/or plot. Many game developers seem to have lost all imagination for coming up with new and original, truely interesting games. Also, I agree that most of the new MMORPG's are just rehashed versions of Everquest and UO. However, I must disagree with you about Star Wars Galaxies. Although it is a MMORPG, and was built upon many of the same concepts as EQ and UO, it will be completely different. I believe it is going to set a new benchmark and/or standard for MMORPG's. Go check out the 'FAQ' and 'Guide' section of www.starwarsgalaxies.com. First person shooters bore me after about 1 day of play. Sure they look nice, and it's fun to see the gore and destroy things...but they are ALL the same. Shoot your way through a level, push a few switchs, make your way to a certain area to "acomplish a mission," ...etc. Although multi-player can be really fun if you want to shoot your friends :P As far as what I would like to see in the future of gaming...I think it would be cool to see some 'virtual really' games. You know, where you put some goggles on, and suddenly, your actually IN the game. I'm not sure why that hasn't been attempted yet. We've all seen that we have that technology, it just needs to be elaborated on a bit. Sure at first it would be expensive, and probably a bit awkward. But it would take off just like anything else, becoming more stable and affordable. Last edited by chatelainjw; 04-30-2003 at 10:20 AM. |

I have always been insisting on the storyline for games. Even in FPSs where the point is destroy everything in sight, a good story is important. Take HL as a very good example. That game hooked me from the start because of the story first and then the graphics.
We need more games like HL and DeusEx where the emphasis is on the story as much as the eye candy.

I love great graphics but it's just not enough; "shoot stuff and it blows up" gets old fast no matter how beautifully done.

What even happned to the whole VR revolution that was supposed to happen?? Remember VR GAMEBOY? that thing lasted for like 3 mins...
It was all anyone could talk about in...I think it was 98-99. I was kind of looking forward to that...I love playing those simulator games....I dont mean like Flight simulator on your little PC...I mean those huge games that you actually sit down in, and the whole thing moves with surround sound, vibration....those I could stay in all day...they used to have a jet fighter simulator, it was like a big dark blue orb, and it was really dark sinside except for the controls, and the screen, it was just the coolest damn thing I had ever played...Havnt seen it anywhere for a while...

I think you dont see those because like you said, you need the whole experience. you need to feel the rumble etc. i think we'll see other cool stuff though so dont get down.
i think we'll see holographic images like the star wars ones!

no, they would only pop out of platforms like the ones in star wars. They dont just pop out of no where, they are like a phone in many respects.
