Can Counter-Strike's popularity last forever?
I was just wondering about how we progressed from those really hot Pentium II cpus and AMD K6's to P4 3 GHz and AMD Athlon 2600+ cpus and how we will shortly leap to 5 Ghz and then in a few short years 25 GHz cpus.... Not including all the craziness in vid cards....
Can you imagine the kind of performance on CS you can get? Do you think this game, which is the mother of multiplayers, will still be popular then? What say you? I'm voting for forever or at least ten more years +. The phenomenal number of servers that are being used at the same time across the world on this game is just crazy. Valve and Sierra will not lose this precious commodity with lack of vision and sloppy sequels. (Pleeeeeaaaase!)

It will be dead by next year. Face it, most games come with an interest expiration tag. I feel that no matter how good a game is, if graphics or gameplay improve enough in other games then the majority of the fans will abandon it. in that respect, the game is dead when only hardcore fans play it.

Just remember Quake. That game kinda started the internet multiplayer craze. Lots of ppl online fraggin' each other throuhgout the world. id Software even sponsored a contest where Dennis Fong won Romero's Ferrari.
That game is being played nowadays only by either hardcore fans or guys on dial-up (well, I played it once on dial-up and gave up, it was laggy as heck); so, to put it in sleepypost's words: it's dead. The same will happen with every game now and in the future.

I agree
I agree that CS will be dead soon. One must also consider the sheer amount of hacking that goes on in the CS world. It is almost not fun for me anymore because so many people hack. I also agree that it will become outdated, like quake. Quake 1 CTF I still think is the greatest multiplayer mod ever, but I don't think it gets played much anymore. I remember the days when my parents got me an ISDN connection way back, my pings were so low!!!! Oh, the good old days...

I beleive the game will stick around longer than most ppl think. Unless HL2 offers CS2. Even then I think it will still be around for more than a year. This game has been popular for over 2 years, I myself have been playing for 2 years.
As for the cheating...there is not as much cheating going on as most people believe. There are a lot of great CS players who often get accused of cheating because they have spent a lot of time playing this game and have become great. Then we have all the newbs that hear this cheating is common in CS so whenever a skilled player gets 3 HSs in a row they scream CHEATER!! Also these newbs don't realize that when they run around on a map they make noise and experianced players can listen to that noise and tell where they are. Cheating is not as bad as it was with 1.3 and that is for sure. Long Live Counter Strike!!! |

Nothing lasts forever, but I think it will last for another year or so. It is a simple, fun game, and no gamer can ask for more. I know its been out for years, but I just started playing in January and I am hooked. I can spend two hours on IceWorld, without even noticing. One thing is for sure, I will be sure to keep playing until the end.

if you just started playing, then you haven't had enough time to judge its lastability. trust me, many games are incredible to start then boring as hell in a few months. this game is nothing special if you ask me. its very good, but not perfect.

I don't like the game that much. I can't deny its popularity though, I think by next year it will be dead.

I agreed with TimPoet....
I think this game will last forever.Just ask everyone out there in the world about this CS game and you will surely get million and zillion of good impression of it.. Also it was being updated from the 6.x and earlier(the player model seems to be dancing rather than running.......u know what i mean)to the latest 1.5,and there seems to be 1.6 release in the future. ![]() And somehow some new in PC gaming gamer will surely not miss this title as the best FPS game.. I myself have played this game for years and for some reason this game won't bore me.... I got only 2 words for it..........CS forever..... |

well perhaps we need to define "dead" because surely no one thinks CS is the best game of all time, right? (if you do, please just keep cool). I think "dead" means no one is playing it. i definetly don't think people will be playing it in a year.
As sad as it may sound, i think the original zelda is dead. I think Final Fantasy 7 is dead. I think Metroid and Pong and Streets of Rage are all dead. I mean, these are ground breaking titles, ones we will never forget but com'on, they're DEAD. D-E-A-D. Most of them were TEN TIMES more popular than CS will ever be.

Sleepy, boy, are you down on CS or what? When those old games were around there were nowhere near the amount of computer owners as there are now, so I doubt there were more of them than CS players. CS is a phenomena that broke all bounds when it came out and that was 3-4 years ago and it is still going strong. It definitely will be strong in a year from now. You can't kill a trend that strong that quickly.
The advent of Half Life 2 will spur more interest, too. |

I'm not trying to sound like an A-hole but I don't think ppl who do not play this game regularly can really say how much longer it will be around. You guys that say it will be dead by next year, I find that very hard to beleive. At this moment the only game I play is CS and I am a member of a very large CS community. I don't see the end of this game anytime in the near future. It may die down a little bit within a year but It definetly will not be D E A D. There are so many ppl who are just now getting into the game and for most ppl, CS is a very addictive game.
I played Quake PainKeep b4 I started w/CS and I can tell you that Quake wasn't nearly as good as CS is. But I'm not a big fan of DM type games so that just me. I think CS still has a good couple of yrs left. If HL2 comes out, hopfully it will spawn CS2 which will have better graphics and much more. But until then, CS will stay pretty steady for a few more years.

CS will be a hard game to kill considering there are many good players that win money in tournaments like CPL. And who wouldn't want to win money for playing games especially one they are good at.

Lol, Jeradln82, i do not think you are an A-hole at all!
that is absurd to even think of. i respect everyone's opinions on this forum especially enthusiasts of a particular area that im not even familiar with that well. ![]() Also, yes, i am down on CS because compared to classics like the one i mentioned earlier, it is just, well, comparable. I hope i DID get my point across that i think people will be playing it in a year and after, but that doesn't mean its alive. if one wants to compare it to starcraft, i think starcraft is dead (only hardcore dudes play it). being dead isn't a bad thing. I still dust off a few oldies now and then, but that doesn't mean they're alive again, instead, i'm just taking their spirits for a walk...

CS popularity shows no signs of diminishing. Love it or hate, it is still the most widely-played team-based game on the net.
I put it down to the enthusiasm of it's thriving community. |

I actually haven't played CS since 1.3. I don't know where it is now. There are so many games out there that I just don;t have the time to play them all. Plus cheaters ruined it. I actually have moved more to PS2 and XBox where everyone is equal and there is little cheating if at all.
