I'm thinking about getting a computer and using it as a permenant dedicated server for Counter Strike. I have DSL and getting a Pentium 133 and 32 MB of Ram. Would this be good enough to fit 20 players?

I doubt it. Cs is server intensive from what I have read: things like dual cpus and a gig of ram and so on being mentioned as just right. There are sites about running cs servers so google em and read up.

You will definetly need more power, and a strong connection to avoid lag in games. Here is what Counter-Server recommends: http://server.counter-strike.net/help/requirements.html HTH

Hmm, what about running a server for a Half Life mod that doesnt have a big hardware requirement. Like a "Battlegrounds" http://www.bgmod.com/.

OK, I am about to just try and find CS to see what the big deal is with it. I have been playing UT for 2 years now, and the only thing that really interests me about CS is the ability to use voice communications.
Any suggestions about this?

Colb Dog, I was also a huge UT player before I went to Counter-Strike. The only thing that might take some getting used to when switching games is that in CS, if you die, you dont respawn immediately, you have to wait for the new round to begin.
With that said, I have not played UT in 4 months, and CS is taking up a lot of my time. I think any FPS fan will enjoy the change. The realistic weapons, the team element and the voice all great bonuses. |

CS Retail should be fine. Be prepared; you will never be the same....

If you get Half Life and mod CS, you'll get a two for one deal!

You could get away easily with a P3 600-900 with 256Mb Ram and a nice HD, but you'll have to have big fat bandwidth pipes to make it worth while. If you're on anything less than a T1 connection, you're wasting your time. Upload speeds are capped on almost all home DSL and Cable Internet services.
