really bad Wolfenstein problems - please help.

I gotta tell you guys I'm pretty pissed with my rig right now. I bought RtCW yesterday, and installed it. The sound cut out of the intro halfway through. Then it crashed and caused the system to restart during the cutscene leading to the first level. I was able to bypass that problem by hitting escape, which took me to the first level. But I can't even get out of my cell without it crashing hard and restarting. So I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, and the installer crashed. So I ended that task and tried again. Upon trying to reinstall it, it gives me some long error message. So I tried to uninstall it again, and I get another error message that it can't find install.log, and it won't let me uninstall it. I feel like throwing my rig off the deck.

I'm running an athlonxp2000+, asus a7n8x, 256mb ram, radeon9000pro. All the drivers are current, and i'm running WinXP Pro (no SP1) with DX9 (might be 9a).

Please help.

What temps are you getting?

Is this the only 3D app crashing?

Try running 3DMark on your system and see if it passes all the tests.

I don't know the temp, but I'm not overclocked, and I have no problems running splinter cell for hours at a time.

Have you downloaded the latest patches for the game?

Not always, you would do well to recheck and compare the version your game is with the most up to date version in the Activision web site.

I'm pretty sure the current version is 1.33, and 1.41 for multiplayer. I did the 1.41 update for multiplayer before I uninstalled it the first time, and the single player version already has the 1.33 patch applied (says so in the documentation). I think the version number isn't even the biggest concern now. The biggest concern is getting the game installed properly. Do you have any recommendations for uninstallinig the game, given the current situation?

What I do to un-install a failed install is: delete *every* registry key related to the software using regedit(backup first), delete all folders the software created, and delete all shortcuts and Startup items related to the software. It's not a total un-install, but it will work as long as you're going to re-install it anyway.

I had the same problem with this game about 1 year ago. I rolled back the detonator driver (sorry I dont remember the version) and it worked fine after that. I had the same problem with Freedom Force and it too was fixed when I rolled back.

Alienware_Dude, you da man! Thanks, buddy. Deleting the registry files allowed me to reinstall, and this time the program works. Problem solved.

Glad I could help! There's a piece of freeware out there that deletes the Registry keys for you if the un-install routine fails, but I can't think of it off-hand.
