Thinking of picking up a Viper V770. Is it worth the extra bucks to get the Ultra version? Will the standard card overclock to anything near that of a non-overclocked Ultra?(The only diff. I could find between the two was the clock speed)

I'm not a real big gamer, so cutting edge performance isn't an issue. Just looking for a good all-around card.

The 770 is a well rounded card. Good 3D graphics and decent drivers. The ultra wouldn't cost much more these days and would show a nice increase in games.

Can hardly lose with either card.

I have the Ultra of the V770 and have been impressed. You'll be fine with TNT2's as long as you don't use windows 2000 otherwise there are some opengl issues but there is a fix for them. Eitherway I once had my Ultra o'ced from the 150/183 default speeds to 175/200 and up and it ran pretty stable. I didn't it would oc that good but it did. It still plays the latest games HL and Q3 quite well also. HTH

Thanks guys,

The first couple of sights I searched wanted about $50 more for the Ultra, but I've since found the Ultra for $72 while the cheapest standard Viper was $59. That makes the choice much easier.

The tnt2 ultra cards are two generations behind the current crop. Good solution for good performance. At the price you quoted it sounds like a good buy.

Thanks kraken,

I always seem to run a couple "generations" behind in my effort to balance performance and expense.

That is what I do to. I always stay a little behind because of price

My favorite card of this generation is the Matrox G400 32Mb range. The 32Mb cards will run shoulder to shoulder with a TNT2.

The extra graphics quality of the G400 sees these cards being 50% more expensive these days and so not as nice with Price/performance considerations anymore.
