lukedamac. From all of the gamepads that I've used, nothing beats a keyboard and mouse.

The only good players I know that don't use a keyboard/mouse use the Panther XL joystick/trackball combo. I personally don't like trackballs, so that was a no-go for me.

Problem with a gamepad is that there aren't any that I know of that'll let you use two analog movement sticks/pads simultaneously, which defeats the whole purpose. Can't stand still for longer than it takes to get a shock combo off or you're a dead man.

It took me some time to get used to as well, but once you get comfortable with it you'll never go back. You might try the mouse in your left hand, with the number pad used for navigation/jumping/strafing. That's what I ended up doing and it works great, as noted in the "Godlike" thread below .

Yah I read that thread man.. way to go! Its been a while since I played any 1st person shooters, guess Im just spoiled rotten, always wanting something better than what there is although an optical mouse with a scrollwheel would be nice.. scrollwheel for weapon cycling. My scores are slowly rising again, takes practice. Anyone remember the name "WaRMoNGeR"? I prolly fragged you a couple times when quake1 first came out

Heh, I was still on 28.8 when Quake 1 was out, AOL too no less. Needless to say I played MUDs and only MUDs til I got DSL .

I highly recommend optical mice as well. I've got the M$ Intellimouse Optical, and it's great. The Logitech one is about the same deal, cept cheaper. I even saw the low end M$ wheel mouse in optical format the other day for around 25 bucks, which is a steal.

Yeah, the optical one is great. I had the Intellimouse Explorer, but I replaced it with the Optical. The Explorer is a bit too big for my taste.

Yeah, well my optical mouse has now caused a whole nuther set of problems, check this out ...

Seeing as my table is a bit too low comfort-wise for playing first person shooters, I use the mouse on top of a hardback book. PROBLEM: My hand is now wearing a HOLE through the book! The people at Barnes & Noble are gonna think I'm a moron when I go in there asking for a "Book of EXACTLY this thickness, doesn't matter what it is".

It's not, hence the book. Keyboard in my lap, mouse on the desk. Mouse too low, raise it with the book .
