Best benchmarking software

Hi,
I'm a newbie and I want to ask you folks if there is a good overall benchmarking software for the PC and if so, can you give me a name please?
Thanks in advance

for 3d benchmarking get 3dmark2001
and for the pc get pcmark2002
you can download them both for free from www.futuremark.com
another good one is sisoft's sandra
www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra
it's great for seeing how your pc matches up to others.

The best benchmark is everyday normal use. Much better then those synthetic things. They're pretty much worthless.

I like SANDRA, especially for memory bandwidth benchmarking.

It is a synthetic benchmark, yes. it doesn't measure 'real-world' performance, but you can compare the relative performance of different systems with it. Example: I get 3100 MB/s buffered, and some guy with a P4PE gets 2500 MB/s buffered. Now, I may not get 3100 MB/s in real life, but I know I get roughly 600 MB/s more bandwidth then a P4PE-based system, no matter what the actual number is.

Benchmarks are best used to be relational, as in wether your latest attempt at tuning has hurt or helped performance since the last bench, rather than an absolute comparison of your rig to anothers.

And 3dmark2001 crashes systems OC'd too far, as well as highlighting changes. My favorite use for benches. OC'd too far will lower cores as well, perfect.
