Unreal (Gold edition)

Yeah, yeah, I know - it's an old game. But it's still good! Anyways, I decided to reinstall it recently - I was feeling nostalgic - and I have a small problem. When I first install it, it plays fine, but as soon as I reboot my computer, and then try to start Unreal, I get a General Protection Fault, and can't get the game to start.

Here's what it says:

"Critical Error

General protection fault!

History: FlightManager:Init <- URender:Init <- UGameEngine:Init <- InitEngine"

This is an original copy, not a pirated copy. I don't know why it does that. It is really annoying, since I have to reinstall it again and again and agin, and in the process I lose all my old saved games. Speaking of which: how can I restore my old saved games? It seems that just cutting and pasting them in the new "saved" directory doesn't work. I have to cheat my way up to the level I was, which is slightly annoying, and I want to keep my old games!

Help!

as i recall unreal gold uses the 226f patch (or whatever) that brings it up to unreal tournament graphics, which means you should check and make sure that the unreal tourny system requirements meet your computer (since ur are runnin an old computer). hopefully its not the fact that u have an ATI card but update your graphic drivers just b/c you can't even get the game to run its unreal engine for the opening game fly-by.
make sure you disable everything in ur system tray and background progs and uninstall then reinstall the game.

ur save game should be under [C:\UnrealGold\Save\] directory and have a name like "Save0.usa" or "Save1.usa". if that doesn't work for saving games there are also .tmp files in the main directory that when opened up look kinda like save files so you can try on saving them and placing them in ur newly created unreal folder.

when u start it after the reboot are you starting from a shortcut or from the cd? just goto your start > programs > unreal gold > .exe file and run it that way

reply back with results please.... glad to help!

No problem there, I've been playing unreal tournament for years now.

I doubt that is the problem, since right after installing the game (and not rebooting) everything works fine. I'll update just in case.

Hmm. just tried that. it kinda works, but I still lose everything. it runs as if it were the first time I was running it... I'll have to keep searching...

thanks for the help!

I seem to recall that Unreal saved info of the saved games in another location aside from the Saved folder. Check the main folder of the game for saved games related files.

I'm using D3D, and I'm not overclocking...

Thank you, though... I wish it was that simple
