This should be illegal...

I just read in a certain PC mag(don't know if I can put the name here) that Nvidia and Electronic Arts are partnering to bring "exclusive content" to games that can only be enjoyed by those using Nvidia cards in their machines. This sounds like a desperation move by a company that has lost it's edge in the marketplace. Neither company has gone into details as to what the "exclusive content" would be, but an EA spokesperson was quoted in the article as saying that future EA games will look better with Nvidia based cards. Has anyone else seen this article or heard about this elswhere? I'm not partial to either chipmaker myself. I buy the card that is the best for the money, and right now it seems that ATI is the way to go. I think this is a low blow on Nvidia's part and that EA could loose a lot of business if they are serious about this. I and many other gamers am on a tight budget and I'm not spending my hard earned money on a card with inferior performance just to get slightly better graphics or to play an "exclusive" hidden level. I'll be very interested to see how this story unfolds in the future.

Ya I read that too in PC Maximum . Nvidia is on a sinking ship and trying to offer its loyal customers some cheap perks. Like if some games distributers will limit its sales by offering it only to a select few. nonsense. Im not going to go buy another card so I can play certain games . total giberish.

It's no different than a game console having exclusive rights to a game, it helps sell the console. It's called a free market and it works well. EA and Nvidia will do fine.

The real issue is why EA would want to participate in a program that reduces its potential market.

Yeah, someone brought this up a while back...

Its a shame, but if Nvidia wants to walk in the footsteps of failure, I say let them...The best that could happen is they gain/or keep a small percentage of business over ATI, they will never beat anyone with poor capitalist techniques such as this...but they could also experience a massive boycott, in which they would lose millions...Its a risk, and the pay off of it being a successful venture is pathetic when compared to the situation they will be in if it turns out to be a really dumb idea...I think they need to go under some new management...

EA practicly owns the gaming world and it makes me wonder what logic is behind this? I think Martha Stewart is involved in this !!

Personally, I think EA is a bit overrated.

I doubt the "special content" will be any good, even so, I can guarantee that plenty of "hackers" will find a way to run the "nVidia extras" on any card.

What should be illegal is the price gouging NVidia does while not forcing their pardners to maintain a simblence of quality.
It won't matter if the rumors are true and PowerVR comes out with their next gen cards. Then with ATI being the power hitter and PowerVR splitting the rest of the market, NVidia will have to shape up or die, instead of spending their money on hyped advertising.

3dfx onced did this. Released demos that only worked with Glide.

Although the full game worked with other cards too.

Considering nVidia cards still can't match ATi's IQ, and their DX9 implementation is pretty weak (ie: shaders, etc) I'm curious how games would look any better while running at the same FPS.

But also, remember the whole nVidia exclusive Half-Life 2 thing? That never came to be, in fact Half-Life 2 is showcased using ATi cards as you probably know. Maybe this is all just a publicity stunt or something.
