Boom Attempting LAN Games

I've got my mini-network up and working fine. Thought I'd play around with a few old games to see if I could get them to work in a multi-player setup on my two computers.

Tried Half-Life first. Made sure both progs were same version. Added IPX protocol to both machines when my 98 box said no IPX could be found. Mostly, the 98 box froze up. Once, it saw the game created on the XP machine, but locked when about to join it. XP was able to create, but 98 could never see the game.

NHL2000 did same thing. We were able to chat in game setup, but the 98 box kept locking up here and there. Couldn't ever see the game that had been created on either.

Thought that since file sharing was working well that this would be alot easier. Any ideas?

Thx.

Try using TCP/IP instead.

That's the protocol I had installed on the network to start with. We tried to connect with no real success, so that's why I added IPX.

Any ideas?

Are you absolutely sure that both computers are communicating to begin with? Make sure they're both working under the same workgroup.

games usually tell you what protocol they need to use

Network has been up and running for a bit. Files haring and print sharing has taken place.

NHL said IPX network required, and Half-Life was giving an error msg like "IPX not found" or something, which is why I went ahead and added that protocol.

I have PC-Cillin firewall installed on the XP machine. That the problem? Even though network is working, maybe it's preventing the games from communicating? Have to try that later.

well I had zone alarm before, and I couldn't play half-life online without unchecking block UDP somewhere in the options. that was for internet games, I don't know if LAN is the same.
