Question Gaming Performace

Will a sound card affect gaming performace? If the sound card is of poor quality and you have the sound quality turned all the way up, will it cause the game to lag?

If your soundcard is the biggest bottleneck, then that is one amazing computer.

Are you having a particular problem with a game?

When I was using an el-cheapo generic C-media chipset sound card, I had a lot of problems with games and movies having terrible sound and lockups. I replaced it with a Hercules Game Theater XP, and it made a huge difference.

When I play Ghost Recon it plays best with the sound off, otherwise it lags. My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live. Here's the rest of the system: PIII 1000, 512 PC133, GeForce 4 MX420, with WIN ME. Thanks for your replys!

Benchmark the game fps with sound disabled and with it enabled and that will show you the performance hit.

An SB Live! is NOT a poor quality sound card. It's more than capable to take on today's games no problem. This seems very strange.

Benchmark the game as suggested and post back with your results.
