Doom 3 or HL2?
If I gave you $50, and both Doom 3 and HL2 came out at the same time both at $50, would you spend your money on HL2, Doom 3, or would you Keep it and wait for something better?

Half Life 2 looks too amazing in terms of GAMEPLAY and graphics. Doom III just looks graphically stunning. I am a fan of GAMEPLAY. GAMEPLAY is what makes a game fun. Graphics are just candy coating.
I'll be owning both though.

I plan to buy both, but if I had to choose, I would get Half Life 2. I loved the original, and I have to save the world again!

I started gaming with Doom so long ago... I bought Half Life and loved it... tough choice... but I'd get Half Life 2 first... both are definite "must-buy's" for me...

IMO, HL2 no contest. I love Doom but it doesn't even compare to what HL is going to bring to the world of gaming. The first Half-Life raised the bar in FPS but HL2 is going to raise the bar in all forms of gaming.

I think HL2. It should run better on my machine than Doom III will.

HL2, because Doom's storyline sucked and from what I've heard it's gonna suck again.

I reserve judgement until they actually come out. That way I don't have to make up my mind based on a couple screenshots, movies, or how stupid the story line 'will' be.

I dont want to see any of the two. Doom 1 was great cuz it was a huge step up from castle wolfenstein, and the only one in its kind back then
i didnt like half life 1 at all (was more than fed up with that alien crap at that time) so i cant talk about that im fairly sure both will be bad just as all the movie remakes, sequels, they do Or like RTCW, it was a total disgrace to the original wolf3d. what on earth did those ridiculous zombies do there? even NOLF 2 didnt nearly live up to the original. (although it wasnt a bad game, nolf1 was one of the best all time imho) id like it a lot more if those companies took the creativity to create new ideas instead of trying to live on the glory of old games.

You want new ideas? Go see the HL2 demo trailer. You will see new ideas you never thought of. |

Well like i said i dont like half life 1 (storyline, maps, npc's, ..) so i wont like half life 2 anyhow im afraid.
i didnt saw any demo movies, since that game doesnt really interest me, but i just looked at a bunch of screens, and im not impressed. yes its a bit better graphics, and many other things will be 'better' too but its just the same thing over and again. bad guys come, you killem all, and so on, with a few 'puzzles' to get a door open or a machine running or so. edit : i just saw the hl2 docks trailer and its just what i thought. some graphic improvement, but for the rest its the same over and again. they do if the makers dare to be a it creative. games like JK2 with the multiplayer sabre fighting, nolf , operation flashpoint which was absolutley fantastic or even vietcong, mafia (ok 3rd person but still worth it)
and sequels can be good btw, look at vice city which still has the 'feel" i had when playing gta1 on my ol' pentium 100, but has so much fun things to do the replayability is great. Last edited by grasshopperbe; 08-16-2003 at 10:40 AM. |

in response to greenleaf :
the ones i noted in the above posts a few other games that i liked personally were homeworld:cataclysm, black & white, giants citizen kabuto, thief , the old c&c series, civilisation 2, .... there are many more i am forgetting , but i mean the ones that dare to stand out. regretfully, many producers only want hugely selling crap games these days (the last matrix game anyone, dtm race driver? total junk.) |

grasshopper...i dont understand why you consider new games in a series a bad thing....there are going to be tons of people who are going to buy this game so why shouldnt they make it? they are out to make money and what better way than to continue a few of the gaming markets games? you have the right to your opinion but saying halflife was a stupid game is kinda a weird thing to say because there are so many people who still play it.. there are many people that consider what you like "bad games" so why dont you respect the opinions of others...
civillization is also a sequel is it bad because of that? in your mind it should be...i dont understand your thought process on the topic.. |

Dude, I'd definitely have to get Half-Life 2. I always thought that Half-Life was one of the greatest games ever especially since there are so damn many modifications of the game. If you gave me $100 bucks then i would probably buy two copies of Half Life, one for me and one for my buddy.

lol...tha's pretty funny....I just recently started playing HL and it is so addicting. I didn't relize that each level isn't like a seperate level, it's just on continuous game to get to the surface....its really ingenious how they pulled it off...

i dont think sequels are necessarily bad, but ive havent seen much good in the last time.
i've played most of the originals of these games when i was young, and the sequels are often somthing totally different that what (and several pple i know from about my age) expect. this was esp the case with rtcw, or civ3 and several others. rtcw had that zombie thing, what has that got to do with wolfenstein? , civ3 had lots of stuff left out from civ2, so that was a bummer towards the end of the game. and that "3D" version of monkey island for instance pretty much sucked. (i loved that game in the dos days ) about HL2, id didnt say it is a bad game but that i dont like it personally. all that alien stuff, i think i had enough of that after doom series, duke nukem3d and so on in those days. pretty much the same with unreal2, which i played recently. bleem, how do you mean i dont respect the opinion of others? i'm just giving mine, i dont want to be rude to anyone or so. BTW, i did an earlier response to your post a little earlier this evening, but it dissapeared or i did something wrong when posting. did anyone see it? |

I am looking forward to HL2, however I agree on some of your points Grasshopperbe. Too many clichés in games nowadays. Seems like the designers are running outta ideas.
Some sequels are good, though. Fallout 2 for instance; it surpassed the first game. Same with Thief 2. In those games, the developers LISTENED to gamers' opinions and complains and enhanced the sequels based in them. For example, Fallout 2 included a "push" action option to avoid the annoying bug in which NPCs often blocked doors and there was no way of moving them aside from killing them (and then restore a saved game). Thief 2 had the zombies removed (they do make appearances but as easter eggs) because so many ppl didn't like them in the first game. As I have stated before, Nuke's rule of gaming: "a game is only immersive because of the storyline, not the pretty looks". Why did I enjoy Arcanum so much, even with the horrible outdated graphics? Because the story was great. Same with DeusEx and the Baldur's Gate series (well, these ones didn't have outdated graphics when they came out). Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is another fine example of a sequel well done and worthy of buying and playing more than one time only. Last edited by Nuclear Krusader; 08-17-2003 at 10:16 PM. |

Thief 2 was a fun game indeed, i played it at a friends' house a few times, but not enough to really see it. i really hope those upcoming sequels of sam n max and full throttle will be good. the originals were so good games. |
