HL2 and HL1

Does HL2 start out with a brand new plot, or does it start where HL1 ends. Will I not understand HL2 as well with out knowing the plot of HL1?

I suggest you just buy the game. It shouldn't be to much now. Plus it is the best game i've ever played.

Here's the run down of the first game:
At the begining you are a scientist (Gordon Freeman) who works at a lab called black mesa. You put on an HEV suit (I only mention because i'm sure it will be in the 2nd game) and are asked to help in a experiment. You push a wierd object into a beam, all hell brakes loose and you have opened up a portal to another deminsion. Aliens are appearing in Black Mesa and you must find your way to the surface. As you progress scientist and policemen help you. Once scientist (Eli Vance) appears in the second game and has a daughter (Alyx) and Barney the security gaurd from the first is also in HL2. The G-Man is a mysterious man who would appear throughout HL1. You cannot kill him and he is not very helpful in your adventure. At the end he says he and his associates have been watching you (Gordon Freeman) and wish that you would come to work with him. If you don't he sends you to your death. If you do, the game ends. HL2 begins. It is not known how long after the first HL2 takes place, but it is rumored years later.
