I saw this else where and wondered if it really worked or would mess up my card. Any thoughts.

All I can say if 3dfx knew about this they wouldn't of be sold of so soon. And frankly they would know about it. Anyone dare to try it, spendng saturday reinstalling Windows is not really my thing so Ill pass.

I've heard nothing but good things about Q3A performance and HSR drivers. If you don't mind messing around in your registry and you need Quake speed, give it a try.

Be sure to read all of the how-to's on this out there, though. As Andrew suggested, if you botch up your registry you'll be looking at an OS reinstall.

Unless of course you back up your registry first...and then mess around in it.

You don't need to edit your registry for enabling HSR, all you need is the drivers with it. You can create a .bat file to start the program with HSR enabled. You can also remove the registry entry using the same downloaded file. HSR was not a cure all end all. It was only working in certain games. It worked flawlessly in Soldier of Fortune but slowdown due to CPU limitations was apparent in cpu intensive areas (like fog/ smoke). HSR uses spare cpu cycles, so the only way around this would be to use a GPU for HSR. I don't know if anyone figured out why it would apparently not even enable on some games, and others it totally screwed up. Also all the hype was bloated. It was benched on Q3 that is known as one of the biggest overdrawn games. Other games make more efficient use of the graphics card (not rendering distant textures or all sides of a polygon ie; driving games where you stay on one side of a wall or hill) HSR caused far less stable frame rates as well ranging from sub 20fps to 200fps, so it's benchmarks aren't a good indication of real life performance. I believe HSR can be beneficial, but it is far from being an end all cure all, and I think 3dfx found that out too late. As it was they only had it in a very early beta state for only one API, and only affecting a handfull of games.

Floppyman,
Doesn't Win98/ ME automatically back up your registry? I had a problem with the registry patch myself, but got instructions for removing it. You could either use regedit, or (I think) by modifying the file used putting a (-) at the beginning and running it again.
