Freelancer issue

I've been palying Freelancer happily for a while now, but after a shutdown and restart, the game stops on loadup before it plays the intro and leaves me looking at a black screen. I can't Alt - Tab or ctl alt del and have to restart my system. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it still doesn't work. This is highly frustrating, as I've been playing happily for ages.
Any ideas?

I'm not an expert, but I'll try to help you out.

Does this happen ONLY for this game? What about other games, or any other programs?
If this happens only for this game, try to use the same CD at different computer (but it's unlikely that CD is broken). Well even if you try the CD at different computer, it's the CD. Try to get it exchanged somehow.
If the CD works with different computer, then it's the software part of your computer. It should be some crucial files to play this game, and which also can't be changed by re-installing.

Anyway, first try to locate the source of the problem.
