Hi tomster2300,
The GeForce4 cards only support DirectX 8 so you'll be limited in that respect since HL2 was written to look best in DirectX 9, but otherwise the game should run good on that system. If you want a DirectX 9 card look at any Radeon 9500 or better, or a GeForce FX 5200 or better, though I would not recommend nVidia cards at the moment since ATI based cards have better performance ratings. |

What about having a 8x compatible vid card on a 4x motherboard... is the performance difference a lot smaller than playing a DirectX9 optimized game with a GeForce4?

But then I wouldn't trade a ti4800 for a fx5200. You would be downgradeing you get CX9 support with a 5200 but 4800 is better. If you buy a fx card get the ultra version or a 9500pro or higher but I think your card is fine for now

Is GeforceFX5200 a directX9 card?
I think it's just the MX line's card....right? |

The Geforce FX 5200 has almost all the same capabilities as the 5600 except that it is a lot slower. I would not recomend this card to anyone. The Geforce 4 4800 should be able to play Half Life 2 at good resolutions.

Alright, I have another question. Would getting pc3000 ram greatly improve game play? Or would getting another stick of 512 pc2700 be better than 512 pc3000? Thanks.

512MB is plenty for most games, so I'd say you'd see more improvement with faster RAM. You could also try overclocking for more performance.

In my opinion you should get another stick of 512 PC2700

To overclock my ram how much cooling would I need in my case? Right now I've got the side off and only one fan on the back. (not counting the heatsink fan). The temp is running at around 100 F.

If I were to buy a radeon 9700 pro, how much improvement would that give me? Would that blow my gaming away, or would it only slightly give me a boost? I know the radeon 9700 pro is fully directx 9 compatible, while my geforce is not. Does this greatly improve gameplay? If I did buy the card, would buying another 512 mb stick of pc2700 boost performance significantly? I've never seen a directx 9 writtern game played on a radeon 9700 pro or any card which fully supports directx 9. Thanks.

For a game like HL2 another 512 sitck would significantly increase performance. I responded to this question in your other thread.

If I were you tomster, I would get the game first, play it, see how well it performs with current specs, and if you feel it could be a little more, I would say get yourself a Radeon 9700pro, because, while RAM is the most efficient price/performance piece of hardware you can buy, a video card like that is a valuable investment into the longevity of your system, it will be able to handle just about anything you throw at it for a while.

What's the difference between the Radeon 9800 and the Radeon 9700 pro? The 9800 non pro is $299 while the radeon 9700 pro is $399 (ATI's official site, i know you can get em a lot cheaper). Is the 9700 pro better than the 9800 non pro? Thanks.
I know I'm posting twice, but I dont know which thread people will be most likely to go to. Sorry. |
