Juts received Halo for the PC and am disappointed in that the gameplay is very jittery and slow (a bit like catchup) - and this is not online. My PC spec is:
1.2 GHz Athlon KT7A-RAID motherboard Geforce FX 5200 128MHz graphics 384MB RAM Soundblaster 128 sound 41Gb 7200Deskstar Windows XP Professional Is my PC problem due to cpu speed, RAM, mobo or a combination of these? I am hoping RAM, as this would be the cheapest solution. Although, I will need to upgrade my mobo/cpu at some stage, but was hoping later than sooner.. I am running an 8x graphics card at I think 4x AGP, but did not think this would cause any problems. I am only running anti-virus and ZoneAlarm in the background. And am running Halo at lower Resoltion (800x600) and slowest refresh rate of 60Hz. Any ideas on a likely quick fix? I am expecting MAx Payne 2 in the next few weeks, and guess that this will experience the same problems. Cheers folk, as always! |

Well I haven't been able to load Halo on my new rig yet because the graphic card was defected and am waiting for a new one. But from what I heard Halo needs a high end system to run well. Your best bet would be to get better ram. 512MB maybe able to do the job, or you could go with 712 it all depends on you budget. A graphic card would be my next thing if your really serious about upgrading.

it runs pretty slow on my computer too, even when i overclock everything and turn down some settings at 800x640 resolution. My computer:
Athlon XP Barton 1.8 ghz @ 2.21 ghz 512 dual-channel 3200 RAM Powercolor Radeon 9600 Pro Windows XP Home does the patch help performance at all? |

Isn't Halo2 the game that's supposed to be "optimized" for nVidia graphics cards?
No, wait that's Half-Life2. I'd try a better video card. Last edited by CaptTuna; 10-13-2003 at 09:32 AM. |

Id jump to the 2400+ or 2500+ cpu and add a stick of 512 Ram. your gonna need thoses for future games anyways. ei:HL2,Mpayne2,Doom3 etc etc

you're right, it's optimized for ati cards. I have Halo for pc and it runs smoothly for me at 800x600 res with everything maxed out. Your problem is your video card and your ram. The 5200 is like the geforce 4 mx series, but the 5200 has directx 9 support, the mx ones don't. I have a question for my pc. If I upgrade to a radeon 9700 pro, how much of a difference would halo look and run? I know the 9700 pro fully supports directx 9, but how much of a difference does that make? (I've never really seen a game played which requires directx 9 on a card that supports it). Plus, would I gain greater performance from just buying the new card, or should I put in another 512 stick of pc2700? Thanks, my specs list when I post.
Well, they used to list when I posted... Asus A7n8x-x amd 2500+ 512 mb pc2700 geforce 4 ti4800 se (slow edition) 40 gig 7200 rpm 8mb cache western digital hard drive win xp pro liteon 52x cd burner Last edited by tomster2300; 10-13-2003 at 02:48 PM. |

NO! HL2 is not optimized for ATI cards.
It was the NVidia FX 5900 it took 5 times as long to code special paths for. Since ATI was DX9 compliant it worked the way it was supposed to. The error was entirely NVidia's. |

Jukeboxs,
You're not the only one with that problem. Halo is running on some systems smoothly but everyone else is having trouble like yours. This includes alot of guys with P4 3.0s and 9800 cards, so it's not a matter of power. The first patch they put out had something to do with copy protection that was the 1.01 but there's now a 1.02 as well. You might want to go the Halo site and see if it will help. If not, you're stuck waiting for a specific patch for it. |

What graphics card do you recommend then? Something in the region of £100-£150 (in the UK). As I only bought the FX5200 last week, I am sure I can exchange it for another.
And I'll have to add some RAM too, plus perhaps a faster cpu (although I guess this means a new board as well). Money, money, money... Cheers! |

Price and performance wise ID go for the 9600 Pro. Its my next purchase. My 9000 Pro runs anything that I throw at it with no OCing whatsoever but ppl say that it wont last with the release of Doom 3, HL2 and so on.

Try a Geforce 4 TI 4200 or better or if youre going with ATI (which I recomend) go with the 9600Pro or betetr.

I bought it Saturday and its a little sluggish at the loading points in single player with the specs in my sig and the settings at max in game. This doesnt happen in multiplayer though.

Right now I have a geforce 4 ti 4800 se card, not an mx one. Would it still make that big of a difference? Thanks.

the 9700pro owns all the Ti series, but in ur case i wouldnt upgrade from ur ti4800 yet, if you plan on getting hl2 then get the combo with the ATI Card/Half Life 2

The Ti series will do fine. My Ti 4800se will handle any game out today.

What's the difference between the Radeon 9800 and the Radeon 9700 pro? The 9800 non pro is $299 while the radeon 9700 pro is $399 (ATI's official site, i know you can get em a lot cheaper). Is the 9700 pro better than the 9800 non pro? Thanks.

The 9800np is very similiar to the 9700pro they get almost identical benchmarks. But the 9800np can be easily moded to a pro.
By the way I played Halo 1024x768 2x Anti-Aliasing 8x Anisotrophic Filtering with no lag. Game looks great. |

You guys need to understand that it is not how much RAM he has, it's how much RAM the game requires to run. If he has enough RAM to run the game, he doesn't need to add any more RAM.
If you want better game performance, the things that matter is the CPU and the Video Card. |

If your playing on hard levels then take it slow and dont rely on the AI the only start shooting after they get shot. The best overall weapon is the pistol. the worst is the assault rifle.
