nVidia loses again...
Chip maker ATI Technologies today officially announced that it has inked an agreement with Microsoft to develop graphics technologies for the as of yet unnamed Xbox successor.
"We're combining Microsoft's vision, software experience and R&D resources with ATI's pioneering leadership in graphics technologies to create innovative future Xbox products and services that meet the lifestyle needs of consumers in the Digital Decade," said Microsoft's Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home and Entertainment Division. "We selected ATI after reviewing the top graphics technologies in development and determining that ATI's technical vision fits perfectly with the future direction of Xbox." Though rumors leaked out earlier this summer about Microsoft dropping Xbox graphics chip maker Nvidia in favor of ATI (the same company behind GameCube's Flipper graphics processor), ATI and Microsoft have finally made their new partnership official. "Microsoft shares our passion for cutting-edge innovation," said K. Y. Ho, chairman and chief executive officer, ATI Technologies Inc. "Our success working with Microsoft in the past gives us great confidence as we move forward, and our broad experience and wealth of engineering resources will ensure that we deliver. This agreement cements ATI's position as the prime graphics supplier for the future of the games industry." Microsoft has yet to go on record why it has chosen to switch partners, but industry pundits blame past squabbles between the two companies as well as the fact that Nividia doesn't have a license for Intel's Pentium 4 bus (the logical step up from the current Xbox's PIII), while ATI does. First nVidia loses on the video card front, now it loses the deal with M$.. it aint lookin good...

I think nVidia has a loyal enough user base, that as long as they keep up with ATI, they should still do ok. Losing the Xbox graphics will definitely hurt them, though. Definitely not the news nVidia investors want to hear.

Yeah, I don't think nvidia is out yet...their two new cards look a bit promising (although I won't buy them).
