Online gaming whats Ping

I just started trial version of Halo I've been playing online but I want to know what is the ping. When choosing a game should I go for one with higher ping or lower ping I have a dsl connection.

The ping is the milliseconds in time that it takes for your computer to talk with the other computer, if I am correct. And yes lower is better.

Yes, ping is the time data is sent and receive back. Lower is better-no latency meaning faster responses.

Heh, on Halo multi, the best ping is no ping. Seriously.

Yeah I noticed its sluggish no matter what ping or no ping. I'm playing and I suddenly appear in another spot.

Yep, that happens, tho in only some games. Some people have solid computers and it doesn't happen.

That happens in Medal of Honor if the server is slow. You can't shoot or move. My ping is usually 10-20 in Halo and MOH.

Anyone know how to show your in-game ping in Halo? Is there a console command for it (how do I bring up the console in that case)?

Same goes for FPS, or should I use FRAPS?

What is your internet connection? The reason you have no lag when you started a server is just that. You started the server so your computer doesn't have to connect to a remote server. The ones who will experience lag are the other players.

yeah because when you create the game the packets don't have to go anywhere, you ping zero to the server, obviously.

In all likelihood you don't have enough upload speed on your DSL connection to host more than a handful of players in a stable server, though. Not to mention you playing on it also slows it down for them.

When I host a server, I always make it 2v2. Usually they don't have much lag, and its nice

Yeah my upload is 128k so I keep it 2vs2 nobody complains when its like that. I tried joining games with alot of people but lag is just to much I'm walking towards something and it ends up somewhere else.
