I've played battlefield and only the demos of call of duty, but my vote is for call of duty...can't wait to actually get the entire game.

Interesting choice, as the games are different types. 1942 is a team based online game whereas, Call of Duty also has a signle player.
Something to consider, logging onto a 1942 server as a newbie you might find that you are a signficant disadvantage because many of the people in the game will have played the maps many times and therefore have a significant advantage. Also, there are expansion packs and mods for 1942 so it might be the case that most people aren't playing the original maps anymore (just guessing from my experience with other online games). Both games are highly reviewed, however, so you probably can't go wrong with either one. |

does call of duty require direct 9x hardware?
Hmm... I'm reading that all Geforce cards are compliant, but it also requires direct 9x compatibility...how is that possible? I though geforce's were direct 8x. Last edited by Dswissmiss; 11-09-2003 at 04:49 PM. |

It requires Directx 9.0b (comes on CD), but usually games don't requrie hardware that is at this level (it would really limit sells).

they are two different but similar games. i've played 1942 demos and loved all of them and i recently beat CoD and I am working my way back through it again. The game is awesome in how it throws you in the middle of the action. And the graphics are better than 1942 too, but again, if you think of massive online battles, i think of 1942. i think i saw a server with 42 ppl on it playing CoD... little crowded if you ask me.

I just got through playing one of the demo levels for call of duty and its awesome. I've never really played online, so I'd go for Call of Duty.

I'm a hardcore BF1942 fan.
As such, I am recommending Call of Duty. ![]() I just picked it up this weekend, and you will love it. Especially when you get to be a Soviet soldier. You run into Stalingrad, and they hand you a clip and the guy in front of you and behind you get a gun. You run around, and try to stay alive. You also hope that someone with a gun dies, so you can pick one up. All the while, your Komissars are yelling for you to stay in the battle, and if you don't listen, they kill you. That stage I found extremely amusing. Anyway, the graphics and the gameplay in CoD is very good. The weapons effects are the most realistic that I have seen so far. BF1942, however, has a lot of great mods, and as a team based game, can't be beat. (HA! Take that UT players ) Desert Combat and Eve of Destruction are good mods to BF. Even though you can play single player through all the Battlefield stages, it really is meant to be a multi-player game.

The part about handing you either a clip or a gun is one of the first scenes in Enemy at the Gates. It's a really scary thought... check out the movie too if you haven't seen it.

I'll have to watch that. I just thought it was amusing and somewhat fitting given that it's Soviet Russia.

The vast majority of the people playing BF1942 non-modded are playing the stock maps still, the expansions aren't really necessary. Road to Rome kinda sucked, and due to that Secret Weapons never took off, so you'll be fine with the stock game.
And of course DC is free if you prefer it, just gotta download it. BF1942 is more organized around vehicles, CoD is more infantry based like CS or Rogue Spear, depends on which you prefer. As a pilot I obviously prefer bf1942, since CoD has no player-flyable aircraft. |

Well if you like infantry combat more then get CoD, And if you like large 64 man team based battles with vehicles and planes and subs then get BF1942

I don't recommend either. Go with Ghost Recon or Soldner and stop using bolt action weapons! Stop living in the past, the future is where it's at. Just don't go too far ahead (i.e. Unreal Tournament 2003).

so far I would say BF1942 is better for online gaming. The graphics are better on CoD but for teamplay features BF is better, and it all seems a bit better to understand what the hell is going on. I would wholly recommend you get BOTH!!

i have BF1942 and it ROCKS
there is a singleplayer mode but online play is much better and in battlefield u can use a variety of vehicles and weapons adn there are many mods out for an even greater selection of vehicles and weapons depending on what you prefer AND what was said above is not true MANY people still play the original maps because in many cases they are still the best

have both, and they both rock, but just cause there both ww2 there kinda totally different.
BF1942 has tons of vehicles and good mods(dc kick b00yah) But CoD is starting to be modded and some look prett good, over all Cod has better infanty play, bu there both good. I think either choice is a winner |

Although I rarely can hit the broad side of a barn, I'm hooked on BF. I NEVER play games offline, so the interactivity of it is a blast. For those who have CoD....does the multiplayer even hold a candle to BF?

Well it's different, being all infantry based. It depends on what you prefer.
Tanks and Air win BF1942 matches, whereas CoD is completely infantry based, so they are two entirely different types of games, really. Like I said I prefer BF since I fly, I don't particularly care for the ground battles. On the other hand I can see where infantry players would prefer CoD since the game is based around that. |

have been playing bf1942 for a year or slightly more and played also in clanwars...where the real action is
cod i've bought and allready cs and mohaa are comming in me mind...don't like the gameplay ..in mp the maps are too small and too cs-like also more maps would be nice .. guns are good and better then in bf ..but again i have a feeling i allready played this game...so don't like it.. i prefer bf1942 + mods ...cause of the more realistic feeling in the maps ...vehicle ...gameplay is much more fun can't wait to see battlefield : vietnam

another game to look at, and pls don't judge too early lkike many do ...read it all very good and look at the vehicle and player/guns models...at the right of the page
it comes out around spring 2004 .. http://soldner.jowood.com/ that game ..if it does come out like they hope to will do the gamers shiver of curiosity ...they are not that well know, although 'chaser' was a big hit ... |
