Older games Sloooow under XP
I have a few older games (2 or 3 yrs. sometimes you just want to wip out a "classic") that run incredibly slow (or not at all) with XP. They seem to install just fine.
No probs at all with newer stuff. All drivers & etc up to date. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks. |

well on the game it probably says compatable with windows 95 / 98, and maybe ME, but not xp for the older games, but your new games probably say compatable with XP. well the old games wont run or might but run slower because the older games are not compatable with the Windows XP version.

Weird. I didn't think that XP was all THAT different from 2K. It's prob a DX issue & I seem to remember there was a fix for it somewhere....

The compatibly option FantasySoul was referring to is this: When you right click the app your trying to run, and go to it's properties, there should be a Compatiblity Tab. Click it and it has options to run the game as if it was under an older version of Windows (e.g. Win9x/Me). You can also have it run in 256 Colors for older proggies...

I figured that out (Compatability). Didn't seem to make any difference. Strangely enough, it ran better under XP than in an emulation mode. The game itself runs OK, it's the "cut scenes" in between that run slower than death itself. Weird.

I'm running both SS2 and Thief TDP XP and I have Grim Fandango waiting to go.
They're certainly older games. I would Google the games to find a website for the game and then follow their instructions. www.TTLG.com helped me get both SS2 and Thief running. There are patches and game folder tweaks that will do the job and I know tons of HL and CS players who aren't slowed down by XP. Go find one of the forums for your games and ask there. |

A lot of the older games are designed for slower processor speeds and video cards.
I installed Grand Prix Legends on my PC and fortunately that game is still popular enough that there are a lot of sites supporting it. I had to use a CPU, and a Graphics patch to make the game run on XP. The game maxes out at 36fps, but it still looks good. I would same look for some patches for your game. Good luck

I tried playing Digger in XP and it redefined the word slow.

Altho I also liked Win2k, it would be a step back to install it. And a waste of the 150 dollars the XP Pro version costed me. I will stick with XP until Longhorn ships.

Yeah, I had bugs with 2K that I don't have with XP.... I'll just suck it up & flesh out my "coaster" collection.
