Go settings > video setup and for framerate select of vsynch. Contraty to what is says in the game, it actually improves the performance.

Vsync does help a lot.

And I don't know about an 8500 but if the 9000 are comparible to the 4200 Nvidia's then your 8500 won't be giving out the best graphics ever seen in a game.
Halo by itself is a very demanding game, so with your current setup make sure nothing is running in the background and that you disable shadows and reduce the resolution. It should help a little .

Yeah, why is that Jimmie? The game looked and played good on the XBOX but on the PC it just doesn't run/look as well. Eh, M$.

I never played it on XBOX but it runs and plays fine on my system. I just thought the graphics would be better.

This has been talked about before. Halo doesn't run well on even high end machines (that is, compared to most other games- i.e, Call of Duty, or Jedi Academy). If you have AA turned on- turn it off- this causes problems). Talk about poor code- try to play the online multiplayer game- what a laugh.

On the other hand, it is a very fun game so it worth the below par graphics.

The game will slow down, I run it at 1024x768 and get slowdown to maybe 5-10 fps in big battles. In my opinion, the game does look better on the computer than on xbox, but you will definitely take a performance hit to get it that way if you don't have a high end card. That's not why the game rules anyway (great gameplay, epic story, etc, etc....)

With my 4200 I can jack it up to 800x600 res only....not to mention 1024x768 res or higher.Maybe because my RAM was insufficient for nowadays games.
Will adding ram give more fps??

I have it running at 1024x768 with all the settings as high as they can go. I only get slowdowns in 2 or 3 spots in the whole game. And that's with running a bunch of background apps. My ATI card is set to let the app choose the best settings between quality & performance.

i have a geforce3 on a thunderbird 1.2 and personally have few problems with halo. try turning off some of the bells and whistles like the real time rendering stuff.

as for the buggy code, halo was a first run on the xbox specs. much of the existing api and rules of programming for the xbox platform were not properly laid down. so, halo was highly dependent on the xbox hardware and made use of many cheap hardware hacks. porting it, as you can imagine, or perhaps not, was not an easy task for the programmers.

i think halo is weird. i mean there are like five types of guns, five types of enemies, and most of the backgrounds are highly repetitive, but people don't mind.

I said that more in frustration than anything else. The game looked good on a geforce 3 in the xbox but I also have to remember that that was on a TV. Now I hear (from AerynSedai posted earlier) that they had a lot of hacks to put the game out on the Xbox. Ah, whats next? Hopefully a good, playable version for all. (That's doubtful)
