Hi all,
I finally got 3dmark 2000 to work at last night under win2k...here's what I did. I simply disabled Task Manager...didn't know I was running it in the background all along, and bam the 3dmark 2000 demo works...and the benchmark works. Here's the results: At 1024x768x16bit 16 bit textures, 16 bit z buffer, triple something (can't read now what I wrote down ) and D3D hardware T&L , I get 4272 3dmarksThis comes from this system 2x PIII 600E @800 each Tyan Tiger 100 rev f. 384mb of ram 30 gig 7200rpm ATA/100 hdd ATI Radeon 64mb (running at agp 2x, it's all the mobo supports) etc. Good or bad what do you guys think? Floppy, that's a bit low for the hardware you're packing...
Some other systems running Durons and Celerons are getting that much or better. I'd be willing to bet you have some settings messed up or something. Is your AGP capable and set to 4X? (or the highest capable setting?) Nothing else is running in the background? Make sure you run 3D Mark right after a clean boot with no other programs running in the background (including virus scanners). Re-post when done!

I dunno, that may be about right. Considering you get about 30% less in framerate than any nVIDIA or 3dfx card in standard OpenGL and D3D games like Quake3 and Half-Life, that could be about right. Not that anything above about 70 frames per second makes a difference, but ya know
.Also, I'm sure some of that is Win2k. Win2k doesn't give you the raw speed in framerate that you get out of games in Win9x. Xayd |

Yeah I was thinking that too....how much you guys getting? Also you must remember I have a tweaker programs and have some settings set to high to get better visual quality. Win2k may play an issue in it too I guess. And no AGP 2x is as high as it goes. Also here's a trick I might try. In win2k with a dual system you can dedicate one cpu towards one program so the cpu's don't switch back and forth...which can cause lag in games will try again and see if I can get a higher score.
Update: Well it gave me a score of 4292...then again this is optimized for Direct x 7 I'm using DX 8, I will try this in win98 with Dx 8 and see if I get better...what's a good score to get at 1024x768? [Edited by Floppyman on 01-23-2001 at 12:14 AM] |

I'm thinking that they should be higher there flopster. I hit 4325 with the following;
PIII 800 320Mb CAS2 RAM 32Mb DDR ATI All-in-Wonder 4x (restricted to 2x by my BX board) QDI Brilliant 9 BX motherboard 20Gb 7200RPM IBM drive on a Promise Ultra66. I haven't run the Radeon tweak program on it yet either. Oops, had to edit that. Can't type, 4325, not 4532. [Edited by HAL9000 on 01-23-2001 at 11:53 AM]

Hmmm, yeah I'm thinking that too now...I read an article in my pcgamer and they hit 4,769 with the Radeon at 1024x768. Maybe win2k is part of the problem. I don't if the extra 32mb of memory would make all that of a differece but maybe. I will try to run this in win98 with DX8 when I get the chance and report back...might also try to load the Radeon defaults again (no tweaks) since some of the tweaks did do have an impact on performace...in short..I'll be back

The OS was the culprit...:)
Well I installed win98 today along DX 8...and ran 3dmark2000 again and wow what an improvement.
Settings are the same for both win98 and 2000. Win2000: 4272 3Dmarks Win98: 4978 3Dmarks Amazing what difference an operating system can make. 4978 definetely sounds more like an acceptable score. Wonder why there is such a difference between win2k and win98? Any ideas? |

Win 2K is a newer version of Win NT. Win NT has always been a bit slower than Win 9X for gaming, although it is more stable. Another thing is that the Radeon has more performance and compatibility issues in Win 2K than Win 9X. Hope this helps clear things up a bit.

Well I downloaded some different drivers for my Radeon today...ones that were specifically for DX8 and had some opengl improvements...kinda like beta drivers. Well low and behold I was able to improve my 3dmark score in win 98 from 4978 to 5100 (same settings). Funny thing is with those drivers my score actually went down in win2k, oh well, that doesn't really surprise me though.
