Where's the excitement? (BF1942)

As big fan of RTCW and an even bigger fan of Enemy Territory (I haven't been this addicted to a game since Populous II on the Amiga), I splurged some cash on the BF1942 Road to Rome double Pack.

Ignoring the problems I had getting it to play in the first place, the game just plain sucks. I mean really sucks. Hard.

Now before all the BF1942 fans get in an uproar, let me tell you why.

First off it's slow. Not the framerate, my system's plenty beefy. Just the game in general. I just love running (even the running feels slow) from point A to point B for several minutes, because there were no vehicles available when I spawned, or I can't get a pickup. This might be a realism thing (like the slightly aenemic weaponry) but all it does is make the gameplay monotonous.

There's also very little pizazz. Again, this might be a realism thing, but the sounds seem restrained, muzzle flashes and explosions don't seem like a big deal. The colours and texture maps are very bland.

The computer characters are unstimulating to say the least. Barely any kind of responsiveness, they just seem like they're bored of the whole thing. I can easily walk up to a character and shoot him point blank in the face before he does anything.

What should look and sound like Hell on Earth instead feels more like say, a war game from the SNES days.

As for the gameplay,I really don't understand it. I've worked my ass off being a super soldier, taking out tanks and enemies left and right, capturing points, and I can still be losing, or winning only by the barest of margins. Other times I've just sat there (or been spending countless minutes trying to get somewhere) and my team is winning! Maybe I've missed something, but it seems a little arbritary, like skill and hard work don't matter. Also, the Command and request menu is far too simple. You should be able to issue specific commands, based on whichever map you're on, not just go, go, go.

I'll admit I've been very spoiled with Enemy Territory, but I expected better than this from a game with such a huge following. Maybe somebody has a few suggestions to increase my appreciation for the game?

Crank up the resolution, AA/AF, and most importantly...the volume. Then hit a 64 player server at Wake Island and decide whether or not it's fun.

Resolution is maxed out (told you my system was beefy), did a stint on Wake with 30 other players (too linear, not the best map for multiplayer IMO).

Is AA anti-aircraft fire? If so, what's AF?

Throw the game boxes and the CD's in a fire to help keep you warm. They will probably be more useful to you that way.

I played the demos and liked them but I could see someone getting bored after awhile b/c their teammates suck. Hell, who needs teammates anyway. Just go off and capture all the waypoints yourself. But to be fair, I tried Enemy Territory and I lost interest after about three days. It just seemed pointless to play, no fun. At least I thought BF1942 was a little fun, but not up to enemy territory's level of graphics.

I've found Wake with a large number of players (50-64) to be the most nonstop action map of all, especially if you play Allies. Berlin and Omaha tend to be good fun too. If you don't find it enjoyable than you must be hard to please and need to find another hobby.

Hey, if you want a WWII game with instant action, you should try Day of Defeat.

I suppose some people enjoy running around a crackerbox of a map with no driveable vehicles in sight. But hey, whatever floats their boat.

I'll second CoD. Neat gameplay, AI teammates cover and fight w/ you, enemies more difficult. I found it much more enjoyable than 1942. The plus for 1942 is the amount of different vehicles, classes, and weapons you can utilize.
