Call of duty freezing in third level

I just purchased Call of duty. Love the game but it keeps freezing on me in the third level whe you have to run up to the fence and the Capt. tells you to take the left flank. I get to the left flank and the germans are screaming and shooting the sub machine guns like mad and then it locks up. My video card right now is the Radeon 9500 pro and after the game locks up a window pops up with VPU recover. Do you think my card is going bad or I have the settings to high possibly. Ill try lowering the settings and see if that helps but any more input would help thanks.

This issue has come up many times before. ATI drivers before 3.9 caused this problem. This problem has been corrected with the latest drivers.

Odd. I'm experiencing the same problem, and I have your card and Catalyst version. I think it's the third level (may be the second, though). You're running through a short trench to start the level to where your squad is. You're about to capture the village of Mere Ste. Eglise. As your squad approaches a number of buildings, some Germans open up with MG42's at you. The captain says, "Look out, MG42's," or somesuch, then, "Lay down some suppression fire on those MG42's!" At this precise point (and I've duplicated this on four occasions now), the game hardlocks, and the machinegun sound loops. Sometimes I get a VPU recover message, sometimes not. After this, the entire system reboots, while erratically looping the MG sounds. Only solution is to kill the system power and start from scratch.

I actually think my Cats are 4.3, but the card is an ATi RADEON 9500 PRO 128MB AGP, like yours. I've tried turning off Fast-Write, but no dice. Precisely the same crash.

System's a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM, and the sound card's a Creative Audigy2.

Anyone else running into this who knows what's going on?

Oh, yeah. I updated the chipset drivers shortly before updating the ATi drivers to 4.3 (this was to correct another problem involving SMARTGART always auto-setting AGP Acceleration to OFF). Since everything else runs like a dream now, I doubt the chipset drivers are a factor in this crash.

Anyone? Bueller?

E-mail back from Activision tech support suggests:
* Turn off Fast-Write on the SMARTGART tab of the Advanced Display options. This, however, did not work for me.
* If that doesn't work, turn off VPU Recover on the VPU Recover tab of the Advanced Display options. I'll give this a shot tomorrow and post.

Maaaaan, I just got this card a year ago. I'm not ready to upgrade!

Not that ATi isn't making it hard on me.
