Questions about KOTOR

Hey,

Alright, I have some questions about KOTOR. I rented the game for xbox awhile back after reading and hearing all the hype about how great and wonderful the game was (remember those commercials?). Well I played part of it and thought it was fun, but not super fantabulous. So, I'm wondering what in the world I missed. I read about how the graphics were so breathtaking, but to me they were kind of hit and miss. Some levels and scenes were great, while some levels were entirely drab and down right ugly. (Like the Jedi Academy level). Could this be caused by my t.v.? It's a non digital regular television ~ I'm plugging up with the regular wires the xbox came with. Are the reviewers using expensive optical cables and such? Digital television? Well...I don't have that. Anybody played it? Or could they have been showing pics from the pc version...anybody played any of the versions? Is the pc game beautiful? Oh well. I'll buy it once it comes down in price (which could be now -- no idea).

One more thing, has anyone played Jedi Academy? IGN.com gave it such high scores, so I rented it and hated it. Thought it was a lot like Brute Force ~ jerky controls and stupid game play. I could fight better in Enter the Matrix than I could in Jedi Academy

KOTOR is great because if you're an RPG fan and Star Wars fan this is incrediably addictive and yes the graphics are amazing for a console game. Of course a pc version will be better based on your GPU.

I just thought in some parts of the game the graphics kind of slacked off. Maybe I'm just so used to the bar set by pc gaming that good console graphics now kinda look low end.

In my opinion, the PC version only has slightly better graphics. Of course, on a PC you can anti-alias to your heart's content, so it's not really a level playing field. I don't know, but I thought KOTOR was an excellent game, and I really liked JA(PC) as well. Perhaps you're just not a Star Wars fan?

No, I love Star Wars, I just found Jedi Academy to be very unpolished. (xbox version). The pc demo was fun though, so I suppose it might have just been bad for the console.

Just like Halo. I wasn't amazed when I played it.

True. Halo was a great game, but there was nothing extremely revolutionary to it. I did enjoy the ability to pilot numerous vehicles throughout the game, but to me the game became highly repetitive. After going through an underground bunker maze, you would have to retrace your steps in the next level to escape. More creativity could have been added to it, but in all it was a decent game. I believe its beefy multiplayer is what has saved it for so long. Being able to take advantage of the multi-link capability was a strong point for it, providing for the first time up to 16 players the ability to play the same game on a console. It broke some barriers, but I agree, it could have been better.

Kotor doesn't stand for anything. Site reviewers and fans just abbreivieated it so it would be easier to say.

As for Halo. It was release when xbox first came out. Graphics were AMAZING at the time. They were on par with many PC games. The vehicle concept was like battlefield 1942 and vietnam but if you played either Halo is much much much more fun.

Yes, KOTOR is just an acronym. (Knights Of The Old Republic)

I concur, Jedi Academy was somewhat weak when compared to KOTOR. I love KOTOR because of a wonderful story line and its creativity. In my opinion, it is a classic RPG.

Alright, new question. What made KOTOR fun for you guys? Which storyline did you follow? Did you become a Jedi, hero of the masses and savior of the universe, or did you become part of the Sith; an evil warrior who wreaks havoc, bringing death and destruction down upon the innocent? Or did you straddle the fence, persecuing some while saving others? Finally, and most importantly, was it fun? Why?

I loved the game so much that I have played it through three times. dont worry - i have a life the first time i played it through I followed the path of the jedi. the second time i played the part of the Sith - both times making different choices, selecting different powers etc. I never 'straddled the fence' because this makes the game a great deal harder. It was extremely fun for me because of the thousands of possibilities that exist in KOTOR. Bioware made it so gamers can place their own personalities in the game and I think they nailed that - at least from my perspective. It sure as heck was fun because of all of the choices and possibilities. KOTOR whisked me up in the fantasy like the original Star Wars did.

I'm definitely with you on this one tomster... I found Halo irritating, because every time you did something you ended up retracing your steps to get to the next level, it was much too time consuming

The game is woefully linear. There's the light path, and the dark path. And in each scenario that plays out, you have either the good outcome, or the evil outcome. And how good or evil you are has absolutely no baring on how people react to you (except for your crewmate).

And the deal breaker for me was how you can see both the evil and good ending by what you do at the top of the tower with...that girl (been a while, forget names). You're aura could be the darkest possible, yet if you spare her life, it's back to neutral...and neutral = good in this game for the sake of ending.

And you could be the most noble of the jedi, and killing her will bring you down to evil area.

But it did give me over 10 hours of solid gameplay, so it's not ALL bad.

10 hours? It took me 30-40 hours to finish the game, what with all the side quests .

yes easily 40 hours after all the side-quests. I played thru it one time on pc as a jedi. I never turned to the dark side, couldnt bring myself to do it lol. I think it is one of the best rpgs yet. I thought jedi academy was great too, the pc version is much better than the xbox version imho. I cant wait for Jade Empire, its from the makers of kotor and is supposed to play similairly. Unfortunatley kotor2 is being made by a different company but is still looking very good from what ive seen.

Kotor 2 is made by a different company but that company was recommended by bioware (the makers of kotor) and some of the leading desingers of the first one are on the developing team. I was reading an article dedicated entirely on the game, it seems amazing, from the sounds of it, if you like the first one you'll love the second.

Unless you want the feel/mood of it to feel completly different.
