Question

For the new PC I'm building, I don't forsee a need for the latest high end video card. With the current video card prices in mind, what would you recommend as an absolute minumum video card for a PIII 500? This machie will probably not see any high end games, or at least nothing more demanding than the latest AOE. The only other additional thing this machine will do is scan/edit some photographs and play DVD's. (The wife is not to interested in playing games.) Any ideas?

Thanks...........TH

Voodoo 3 or TNT2 Ultra

Both would fit your needs superbly.

Or even a first generation geforce sdr would work too, if you have trouble finding the other two. HTH

But you can get a Radeon or a GeForce2MX for about 85 bucks.

Why get a very inferior Voodoo3 or TNT2 for a little less??

I have not yet checked to see what I can get a TNT2 or Voodoo 3 for. I did find the ATI Radeon LE 32MB DDR *OEM for $78 + sh. Also found an ATI Radeon VE 32 MB SDR for $89. I'm not sure why the VE was more than the LE. Does this sound about right?

A little less? Maybe you haven't gotten out much. You can get a TNT2 board for around $30-$35 bucks online. For that price you can buy a video card and put the other $50 towards a good set of speakers, 256 megs of RAM, (almost enough for a) Celeron 600, Sound Blaster Live Value, etc. etc.

Granted the V3 is a little pricier... but it is expectedly so, since the only two cards to follow it were a lame excuse for a video card (V4) and an overpriced (at release) good card (V5) with limited support (now that 3dfx has folded). If anyone asks me, the V3 is probably the best and most successful card 3DFX ever made.

Yeah, the Voodoo3's were great cards in their day. If you've got processor speed, you can get 60 frames per second plus in your games with one at 800 x 600 in 16 bit color.

They don't have lots of "eye candy" features but they'll get ya speed enough if you have a bit of processor speed and memory bandwidth in your system already.
