I've been trying to play Unreal with my brother. We are using DUN, with him running the server. When we start a match, my ping is about 200-250. The more I run around, the higher it gets, sometimes as much as 3200+. Earlier today it was fine if I stood still for a few seconds and didn't run around too much at a time. I am using a Diamond Supra Express 33.6, which connects consistently at 26400. This is as high as my phone lines will allow, something I confirmed with the phone company today. I'm running Win98SE on a Celeron 300A O/C to 375 (4.5 x 83MHz FSB) with 128MB RAM. Is there anything I can do?

Unhappy

No, he is using Win98SE, same as I am. Would it be any better if I had him call me instead of me calling him?

Possibly, give it a try and see.

I honestly haven't used the dialup server in Win9x and can't comment on its efficiency that much.

Try this as well if you haven't, have him host a dedicated server and let you dial into it then, and see what that does. If he's just starting a multiplayer game that he's playing in, he might just be sucking up too much in the way of system resources for it to work well.

Dedicated Unreal servers require very little processor usage, and should be a better judge of speed from your end.

After doing a little research, I think I found a solution. There is a setting in the Unreal.ini file under the [IpDrv.TcpNetDriver] section called MaxClientRate. It defaults to 20000 (bytes/second), which is the maximum. Epic suggests a setting of 2600 for modem quality, 5000 for ISDN, and 20000 for LAN. So we are expirimenting to find the best rate. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Yes, you can set that under preferences within the game as well. Try setting both clients to 56k in that option, and see what happens.
