Far Cry plays like crap.....

I'm trying out FarCry and I'm finding it smooth but at times it jumps from 120 FPS down to 10 FPS in some spots, especially when I enter a building.

I put the settings down to medium and got the same result.

My specs are P4 3.06 HT // 1.5 GIG ram // GeForce 5600 128 MB AGP.

I don't think it should be doing this...any of you who have played it, have you found the same thing.

PS Looks like a great game.

Well, your video card isn't the best, but it still shouldn't be that bad.

Have you made sure that you have all the latest drivers for your card and game patches? Also, it wouldn't hurt to run an AV scan and spyware check.

My computer, that has an MX440 and much less RAM and processor speed runs the game smoothly on High settings, so yours should definitely be able to handle it. What have you got running in the background while you're playing??

In the background I have nothing running. I have run spybot, adaware, updated my video card drivers and all that good stuff. The one thing I thought I had but appearently did not was an updated version of Direct x 9b.

The game plays better (still at medium). But when I go in doors in the game it still lags a bit and plays choppy. Never had this problem with a game before. All the other games I've played are on MAXIMUM in graphics with no probs. Weird. The game is still playable though.

I'm definately going to update my Video card to a 256 MB after HL2 and Dooms is released.

thanks for your input.

If you upgrade your video try going for an ATI card. ATI cards have much better performance in DirectX9 games (such as Far Cry) The performance of the GeForce FX cards just isn't very good.

On my old computer system I had an ATI card 7100 DV All in Wonder. It was horrible. But appearently I found out that the card it self was defected via the ATI site. I did'nt care, I did'nt pay for it so I put in my old GeForce card and it all went back to normal.

Then my business partner was givin an ATI 9400 or something... and it worked fine until he updated his drivers and it went to crap. He put in the Geforce Card...and it worked fine.

So needless to say when I got my new system I did'nt want to have anything to do with ATI.

However I am considering...the ATI 800x or the GeForce 6800 Ultra in the future.

So if ATI plays Direct X 9 games (farCry) well.... then how does it handel Nvidia games like PainKiller, Freedom Fighters etc ?

All games use Direct X to some extent. It is a graphic enhancement technology developed by Microsoft. ATI cards are designed to use Direct X to the fullest, while most Geforce cards seem to lag behind.

There is no such thing as an "NVIDIA game". All games can be played with a video card from Nvidia or ATI. High end ATI cards like the 9800Pro/XT and the new x800 cards will run those games and future games very well.

Thanks Alaron56 for clearing that up. I always wondered why people debated over Graphic cards. So I guess you recommend ATI. I just have had bad experiences with ATI drivers.

Thanks for the points. I have a hunch that I will go with the x800 anyway to compliment the rest of my system.

Nothing wrong with the ATI driver suite right now. They update regularly, and I've never had any problems with them.

Ooooh, gimme.

If you can afford that sucker, and at about $480 it's a big hit to the wallet, I hope you enjoy. I guess you even get a copy on one of the Hitman games, can't tell which one from the pics.

That's an X800 Pro. I heard regular X800's will start at $400; much more affordable. Give me 2 in an Alienware video array and stand back.

The only reason why I can afford it (x800) is because I keep telling friends and family that if they can't figure out what to get me for a gift, say at Christmas or my Birthday a simple $20 dollar gift certificate at Best buy or Compucentre will do.

I have $300.00 in GC's.

As for the availability of the x800 I guess Canada has a different shipping date (mid june).....weird, it's a Canadian company and the Head Office is down the street from where I work.

I'd hate to be the cashier scanning all those GC's . Well, like I said before, if you do go with the x800, enjoy.

I played FarCry on a T/Bird 1200, 256MB ram, and G4 Ti4800SE (64MB ram) and got all round good results at medium settings.

If you haven't already done so, then update your video card, and sound card drivers. Then reinstall DX 9.0b.

Also see this excellent guide for tweaking XP and FarCry.

http://www.tweakguides.com/Farcry_1.html

Most old gamers still disable Antialiasing, Anisotropic, and Vsync
out of habit to get more FPS.

Some of the indoors maps are really intensive and you should expect a drop in frame rates - but not anything near to 10 FPS.

I would try some video card and game setting tweaking.

Who's you call'n an old gamer fell'r ........ back in my day we did'nt have no fansy pancy Dx 9's, we just had a Joy Stick ..... (that's right a Joy Stick not a game pad).... and 4 1/4 inch floppies. And we were happy dog goneit. The graphics were big squares and we had to pretend that it was E.T. or an F-16.

No such thing as Double Click an Icon.....
You wanted to play a game it was

Load"$",8 or Load"*",8,1
when the computer found the floppy.. it would tell you it was ready.

then you'd type "List"

Then load it from there.

Darn Youngins...........

I got the game last week end and had to update my catalyst to play it. So far I'm impressed with the graphics and play. I'm playing it on medium. I'm not real good at it. The sound is very realistic. I love to hear the bullets smacking the sand! I'm only as far as trying to destroy the satellite dish. I would love to see it using one of the newer cards. Maybe the 9800 XT

Just finished the Allied Assault, Breakthrough and spearhead. Isn't there supposed to be a pacific campaign? Can't find it if there is

Yes there is. Medal of Honor Pacific Assault it supposed to be out around the same time Halo 2 and Half Life 2 come out. I am eagerly awaiting its release. HERE is some info. BTW, how was Breakthrough? I never bought it for some reason. I love MOH but I heard Breakthrough wasn't that great.

To be honest with you, they all kind of run together after awhile. I last finished Spearhead. I just know that I liked them all. Must admit that I had to cheat to finish the last level on both of them. Just couldn't seem to get it done. I liked Max Payne II also. I didn't have to cheat but I did have to go online to get some hints to beat it. The last level in spearhead has you fighting some incoming rockets and I couldnt whip it. Far Cry is giving me some problems. I'm at the level on top of the cliff and trying to fly the hang glider, haven't been able to get past that one yet.

Yeah I remember the last level in Spearhead being hard. If you want really hard try Splinter Cell. I have been working on that game on the Xbox for months. I have had to look up the walk-through a few times. It's still fun though.

Fibre,

I'm playing on almost an identical setup to yours as far as chip/RAM goes, but I've got 200gigs of HDD and a Readeon 9800pro. I have the exact same problems when trying to play on high settings, a ridiculous drop in frame rate, especially when entering buildings. The whole thing comes crashing to a crawl. Anyone have useful insight into this? I hear the same complaint A LOT. I've got all the latest Catalysts. DirectX etc. I'm also running 1% of my sys resources when I start the game. It's a FarCry issue, not some other software.

Well from what I gathered it's a Far Cry issue. I sort of suspected it any way.

but get this... I got farther into the game (on med graphics) and came into a level where the the frame rate droped even more. I could'nt play it, I had to lower the graphics to low.

I can't wait to get a new video card.

I get the exact opposite of you guys. Im running a 2.4, 512Ram and a ATI 9200. My game slows on the outside levels (especially when the draw gets really far). When I enter a bunker or whatever, the FPS picks up.

I have custom settings, some on low, others on high.

I too have heard a lot about Far Cry issues, the new patch should be out soon.

I'm running a Geforce 5900xt with 512mb ram and p4 2.53 and it plays fine on High settings (1024*768) for everything straight from a boot up, if my pc has been on a while, i find i have to decrease the textures to medium... I only get a frame rate drop when entering buildings whilst shooting, and only for a sec.... other than that its fine.

You must need a Beast to run all settings on Very high, (anyone here do that?)

And whoever said they ran it fine on an MX440 on high settings i find that very hard to believe, i could barely run the game with mine, let alone on high settings.

The only thing that bothers me with the game is the long loading times.... I guess this would improve with another half gig of ram though, which i'm looking into...

Ya it's weird.

Anyway I had to switch from Medium to low 3/4 of the way through the game due to INTENSE choppiness.

I finished it. A very good game.

Im finding that really hard to believe that with the MX440 seeing that its a 64MB card. What is your fps when you run on the high settings?

Yes, in fact I have. I ran the demo with everything on the highest settings. It didn't slow down once. The strange thing is that my Ti 4800se should not be able to run a DX9 game like that. It is a mystery that I have yet to figure out.
