Hi i just put to a new computer and its got a readeon 9600XT V10 video card,P4 and a ABIT motherboard.
50% of games load perfectly but the other 50% dont show on screen but r still running. But the thing is by repetedly clicking the left mouse button as the game is loading i can usally ger them to work and they play fine after that. Could anyone give mesome reasons why its doing this and what they think about my video card.By the way i have directX 9 installed and the vedio card has 256meg of DDR Thanks

I'm guessing that you have the latest chipset and video drivers. Make sure you shut down all unneeded programs from running in the background. Do you have a firewall? It may be that asking if you want to connect.

Dragon is right about he firewall issue. Norton is notorious for hanging games up like that and I'm sure it's not the only firewall software out there guilty of that. Also, you'll need to make sure that you're drivers are up to date, but also your version of directx as well. Most newer games require 9a or 9b. Another thing, if you have xt, make sure it's not overclocked by mistake in the ati control panel. You'll need to right click on any part of the desktop, choose properties/settings/advanced and overdrive. Just look in there to see if everything is at it's default values. You may also want to make sure that your monitor can handle the resolutions you're playing those games at.

With all the forums I visit, I'm constantly amazed at the amount of people who run firewalls and anti-virus software while installing and playing games. It can cause a lot of problems, and aforementioned programs can and do suck up a lot of system resources.

Yes, but if you pull out the plug on the firewall and the antivirus you leave your system defenceless, unless you unplug the connection to the Internet while you play.

Well, it's different for me, as I am on dial-up. I don't know how much of a hassle it would be to disconnect from a high-speed connection whenever you want to play a game.

I'm on a router and then have norton 2003 in the background at all times. Normally, I set up port forwarding for the game I'm playing before I start to play. In the rare instances I've set myself up as a host through the router, which opens all ports to you I've been attacked an average of 10 times an hour by people trying to find an opening in my defenses. Norton goes crazy. I'm glad to have norton most of the time.

Do the games that give you trouble have anything in common ?
Like are they all Open GL ? Were they all installed at the same time and under the same conditions ? When you checked your mobo makers site did they have new AGP drivers for your board ? What happens if you uninstall then reinstall the latest video drivers? Are you trying to force AA and AF in the radeon control panel ? Is FastWrites enabled ? What happens if you unistall one of the troubled games and then reinstall it with your AV and firewall disabled ? Does Event Viewer show anything ? Did you Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close out programs to find the culprit(s)? Your descriptin makes it a software problem so you'll have to hunt it down by trial and error. |
