Time for me to Rant a bit
OK, Right my Rant is with Comcast.
Right now, they have my area provisioned at 3000 by 256. I could get HN with speeds 4000 bye 384. for an extra 10 dollars per month, plus 5 dollars rental. Plus mandatory Pro install. My thing is, I already own my own Cable modem to avoid month rental. I already have my own router. I already have my network setup. Why should I have to pay for a pro install and rental fees for what I already have. I just want the increase in speed and I am willing to pay the extra 10 dollars a month. I want my own equipment. Normally I would not rant about something like this but I feel it is a bad practice that comcast is doing. One, they want you do use their router because they have it locked to only allow 5 IP's. I have heard they keep a back door to the router to monitor or alter your speeds and bandwidth usage, at least that has been rumored, i have no proof. One, it is none of Comcasts business how many computers I decide to run, if they provide me X speed, well if I have 1 or 200 computers I can't break the speed cap. So it shouldn't matter to them. I had a tech agent tell me they might waive the pro install but I would still have to rent equipment, which is the main part I don't want. Guess what, even if they waive the the pro install fee, I would still have to put up with a tech coming out to install it. I find that insulting that I would have to wait around for a person to come out and connect a router/gateway. Pure waist of time. I mentioned that may be enough to drive me to another provider and they pretty much said they would not been on the equipment rental. Comcast is dead set on getting 10 dollars plus 5 dollars for the Higher speed. So I said, find how about charge me the additional 15 dollars and let me use my own equipment. The answer was NO. They want you to use their equipment. I told them the only support I want is for them to make sure I have sync and I am provisioned at the speeds I am paying for. Like I am going to call in for networking or PC help with Comcast. I know I am on my high horse standing on a soap box, but I am getting upset with them over this. It is my intension to get the higher speed package with my own equipment or move to another provider that I can do that even if it costs a bit more. I know comcast has the config file to provision my current modem with the Higher speeds I know a person on the Pro package that is grandfathered in with the modem I have, but they won't sale me that package either. I am going to call them very often on this, even try to setup a meeting to talk to a supervisor face to face if I can. Their are 3 Comcast offices with in a 30 minute drive. One is only 2 are billing offices, one with in 2 miles of my house. 1 is the main tech support call center. Right now, I thinking about calling daily until they are tired of hearing from me. I could switch and get 3000 bye 384 for the same price, and upload is what I really want to increase anyways, but since I am at it, I am going to try and get the 4000 by 384 if I can with out renting their equipment. I could go on and on about this but I won't. I just had to say my part. Welcome opinions, good or bad. If you have anything to say but want to keep it private email it to me at byte2@pcmech.com

Well... I understand your frustration but honestly, I'm still looking for something on the web to make use of the 3M down I got. Doesn't seem like there's any site able to deliver what I'm capable of handling and I don't think my lag, or lack thereof, can get any better with CoH which is my new mmorpg of choice. The whole internet thing is annoying. You can download 3M but uploads are still waaaay limited so if you're downloading from someone because of their upload speeds... pffftttt... and if you're downloading from something already uploaded their broadband capability and traffic can hinder the download speed so pfffttt....
I'm ready for matrix mode. Just plug it into my brain. I can totally understand forcing pro installs for idiots because... well, because they're idiots and having to fix their problem over the phone is ten shades past annoying. But there should be a professional courtesy kinda thing where if you actually work in the industry they just let you handle it. Of course, I'm still for giving IQ tests to people before allowing them buy computers in the first place... |

Are they allowing you to run servers? I can think of no other reason for those Up times you desire. My isp (MCHSI) say no servers... I thought it was a law (or maybe some states) that they could not force you to rent something in order to get a service. Thats all new to me.

no servers, but with a small network of 3 computers, 384 is almost needed.
example, ADSL 1400kbps down by 256kbps comcast 3000kbps down 256kbps I don't care about 4000kbps down since I have 3000kbps down, I am internested in the 384kbps up. fairly active gamer and uploads help pings, not to mension with wife is using another PC. |

Bottom line is Comcast is Comcast and they WILL do it their way or no way at all. They have always done business this way - they just don't care.
Thank God they didn't buy Disney/CC - imagine ABC running they way your ISP is run. Imagine DisneyWorld or DisneyLand acting this way. But it would happen - it's happened with every company Comcast has aquired - CS goes down hill, too many managers and not enough of everyone else, and literally no caring about their customers. I've got Comcast ISP and just hate it - regardless of the speeds I get. But I'm 374ft short of DSL. And quite honestly, I'm considering moving just because I hate dealing with Comcast. Dave.

I will probably end up breaking down and getting the HN package with a waived pro install see and folk over the extra money for equipment rental, but not right away. |

And to think I'm sharing dial-up between 4 computers , no hope of broadband of any sort here. Even a mountain between my house and satellite.
![]() It's one of the advantages of living in the sticks , no choices to be bothered with. Seriously,I hope you can get your problem straightened out, must be very frustrating! Last edited by jamesrpm; 06-05-2004 at 08:17 PM. |

I don't know what they think they can accomplish by locking the router to 5 IP's... all you need to do is put your router after that.. it would use one of their routers IP's and then you could split as many times as you wanted.
My braggin time... I love my 5 megabit down and 1 megabit up

no need to dig this old post back up. A few months back Comcast changed their tune and allow home users to use their own equipment and get the 4000 by 384 connection with out rental fees. I did get the upgrade.
