Did anyone use that new e-file tax filing offered from the IRS? You can file your taxes online without having to submit any forms, but you have to go through a third party. Most of the third parties are like H&R Block, and charge a fee to do so. However, http://www.hdvest.com allows you to do it for free. (acctually, I think they trade their service for the use of your tax info for marketing purposes. that means free to me)
Well, I filled out my taxes, got to the point where it's to be submitte, and then it claimed I had an mistake somewhere in my return, but it's list of errors was empty. Anyone know have a similar result or know a what's wrong? (I'm assuming that if you're reading this message, you're a computerphile. Also if you're reading this message, there's a fairly high chance that you're looking for free help yourself for some reason and/or build your own computer in order to get optimum performance for minimum money. That means you're probably a tightwad, just like me. And if you're a tightwad technophile, then you probably jumped at the chance to file your taxes online for free. So, I figure that there's a pretty good chance some of you know what I'm talking about.) |

3 years in a row I do my taxes with TaxAct- FREE to download for Standart ver.- for Federal Returns. TaxAct -very easy to use.
State I do myself all the time(Tax Act chrarges for State version). First year in US- I went to H&R, 2nd year- my boss did it for me. And since then I do myself. |

I used turbo tax and paied the fees. 25 bucks or so to get both refunds direct deposited.
I suggest the mail if you want to save every penny. |

Four years of filing on line. Two with Secure Tax on line (was free now owned by H&R Block) and two with Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax usually incudes a rebate on the filing fee and this year included a $10 mail in rebate on the program itself.

thanks for all the tips, but i do my own taxes, so I don't need to pay for tax preperation. And i'm only getting a couple of grand back, so it's not worth it to me to pay money to e*file. (remember, I'm a tightwad)
Has no one tried hdvest? They're tech support is really starting to get on my nerves. They are flooding my email box with about 50 messages that simply say "do not reply to this message." My girlfriend tried to file hers with them this morning, and she got the same nonsensicle error message at the end. I'm beggining to suspect that they're just interested in getting the free marketing info. I will say that the hdvest site provided me with a nice pdf file of the necessary tax filings. so if worse comes to worse, and i have to mail it in, i can just print up a copy, instead of sending in my usual messy handwritten ones.
