my main internet interest is pcmech and IE is so slow loading it (about 45 sec. HA) i have been checking out other browsers. i tried a couple and they were ok but just didn't really please me, i loaded mozilla 1.7 on my spare computer and so far really like it, loads pcmech instantly, and seems pretty stable. i know some of you use mozillla , how do you think it compares.

I use Mozilla Firefox (just installed 0.9.1 yesterday) and I think it is great. Tabbed browsing, popup blocker, lots of extensions you can install to do just about anything, not to mention its speed and reliability. It also doesn't share the same security holes as IE. I only use IE now for Windows Update and one internal website that requires it.

i tried firefox and it gave me some errors which i could never resolve is the reason i gave 1.7 a try.

A friend of mine uses Firefox. When I was at his home I had the opportunity to try it as I wanted to browse the web while my PC was capturing a video.
And Firefox was darn slow and I had to launch IE on his PC. . . pcmech loads instantly on IE, dunno why it doesn't load so fast on your PC. Also ebay was very slow on firefox. Maybe it's a problem with his PC, who knows, but I stay with IE

I use firefox as my main browser now, just feels a little snappier, and I like tabbed browsing. One bad thing about it is that it seems to take up a lot more memory than IE uses.

I dunno... Firefox seems slow to me.... I can care less about tabbed browsing as every button on my task bar is in essence a tab... so I move my mouse to the bottom of the page instead of the top... and if I want tabs, I have the crazy browswer plug in.

But you can't bookmark or set your homepage to a group of tabs, you can't save your current session of tabs, you can't rearrange them, ...

But like I said... I could care less about tabs... I have no use for them.... so it's FAR from a selling point to me.

Just like me. I don't really understand what's so great about them anyway.
The only program I like the similar MDI is in Word. Too bad M$ got rid of MDI in their programs. In Word for example I like MDI. . which is one of the reasons I still use Word 97, it's MDI.
File manager was MDI too, Explorer isn't. But that's also not bad for me. And neither is the internet browser.

I like tabs because if I have too many things open my task bar get over loaded and it gets hard to find the window I need. Plus firefox is much more secure.

Once you get used to tabs, though, you find it very hard to go back. With tabs, I can open Firefox and the set of pages that I was last looking at comes back. I can set the tabs to update automatically every so often. If I accidentally close a tab, I can undo it. You really get spoiled by everything.

Okay people, i am a web designer, and ie is the bane of coding etc. M$ never follows the damn w3 rules and messes up everything. Plus ie has too many bugs etc, come on people, firefox for life! (Plus firefox is an easy transition from those who used to use ie.)

Good point, it's not just about standards, IE doesn't support new features in web design, like CSS2.

I tried tabs.. hated them... I would rather have that extra space to actually view the page than see some (what I find to be useless) tabs.

What I don't like about IE is that when you open a new window using ctrl+n, IE starts to load the previous page again in the new window, I don't know why IE thinks that I need 2 open windows with exactly the same page.

Further more, if I start to type a new URL into the address bar and the new page finishes loading, IE inserts the old URL into the new one.

Maybe this is why I like tabs.

personally i like the tabs.
i also like how mozilla is better security-wise.

may well be that is because M$ integrates IE into everything, so in essence some of IE is already loaded into memory?
just a theory, i have no proof.. shame though.

like i siaid on dialup, IE seems to load banners and all the other stuff before it starts loading pcmech, i could probably get a program to cut out banners etc. but i'm cheap, and its free with mozilla. anyway IE takes 45 sec or longer to load and mozilla is almost immediate. i don't have that problem on any other site other than pcmech.firefox had some error popup, i cant remember what it was(can't load page or something ,but it then would) but it was annoying.

Soooo... this is why I see the threads all over about Firefox bugs? Must be IE's fault.

For me... that is a useless point.... I have my homepage set to my ISP homepage... why would I want it, or why would it be any more convenient for it to come up when I open a new window?

Sure I can... but I already have no tabs... why do I want to download and install something so I can go thru and disable whatever... waste of time for me.


OK... what I see happening these days is yet ANOTHER AMD/Intel fight..... The Firefox users seem to be like the AMD users and have to swarm like locusts to convince everyone like it is their mission in life to convert everyone to firefox..... Well, I for one am firewalled and patched, find my IE is loading things faster than Firefox, nuke plenty of nasties with AdSubtract Pro, have yet to receive a virus, hijack, or malicious spyware through IE... so why should I bloat my system with yet another browser?

Well Hal, I agree partially. I am not a Firefox user. I used it for a while. I also tried Opera. I didn't really like either. I settled with My IE 2 and I love it. It has built in pop-up blocking, mouse gestures, and, yes, tabbed browsing. I like the tabbed browsing in MIE2 because to switch pages all I have to do is either move the mouse to the tab bar and use the scroll wheel or hold the right mouse button and use the scroll wheel. I find it much more convienient than clicking on things in the taskbar. I also like the undo button because I always do things that I didn't want to do. All browsers should have an undo button. I also have it set so that when I hit the web/home button on my keyboard MIE2 opens both my Hotmail inbox and PCmech at the same time. I just love this browser. As for speed, it is instant on all pages. It has never slowed down. I do clear the cache once in a while which probably helps. That's another thing. MIE2 puts all those options (clear search bar history, cache, cookies, addresses, form data, etc.) right in the tools menu. The simple collector is another usefull thing. It is sort of like a small notepad with different tabs. I have links I use often, system specs, and other things in the simple collector for quick copy/paste access.

It's not more convenient to have your ISP page come up whenever you open a new page, that's why Firefox doesn't open anything when you open a new tab, and that's why it's possible to set different pages (or about:blank) for startup, new page, and new tab in Mozilla.

Because there are IE exploits that have been around for 10 months now without any patches from Microsoft.

And AdSubtract Pro costs money, you can get the same features for free using Mozilla's built-in popup blocker and Adblock.

I used Mozzilla Firefox and now Ive migrated to Opera. I dont mind any of them other than IE . why ? cause it doesnt have the intergrated pop up blocker eh and it doenst look nice

I am a devoted Firefox user. Tabbed browsing is, for me, so much more convenient than having a dozen windows open at the same time. It's especially great for research, because I can have one window open for each category of research and several pages open in each.

I never find that MSN.com has ONCE AGAIN taken over my homepage, despite changing back to about:blank every single time.

The favorites toolbar speeds things up- I use 6 or 7 websites probably 95% of the time, so it's nice to have pages available at a single click.

I've always found the enormous space-wasting buttons in IE kind of demeaning- do they think we don't know how to use a mouse properly?

I was a bit leery about the integrated google search, just because back when I used questionable filesharing programs integrated search bars kept installing themselves in IE so I just had a bad connotation with them. But the google search bar is unobtrusive and at times very time-saving.

Back with Firebird, I had a lot of trouble getting Flash and Java plugins to work correctly. But those problems vanished with Firefox.

Finally, I feel better about not using a product that has been shoved on me.

Speaking of products being shoved on me, despite having Firefox set as my default browser, it still treats IE as the default- thus, on the occasions I open links from non-firefox windwos, like a chat window or something like that, IE still opens. Is there any way to force Windows to acknowledge that I like Firefox better?

Some poorly-coded programs ignore the default browser settings in Windows and launch IE, you can't do much about it.
