where do you shop for computer monitors?

I need to buy a 19inch monitor and I am looking to try to find a good deal on one. I know shipping normally kills good prices online but probably no more then local taxes here. If I can find one on a good rebate or something that would be good. Tiger has some nice prices but they are mostly refrubs and I am scared to buy a refrub monitor that has probably been on lease for 3 years already. any suguestions?

Around here there is a computer discounter(Mom & Pop) that sells refurbished monitors 17 in around $90-100, 19in $125-150. He even has 30 day warranty. You might look around for something like that.

I got mine at Circuit City... $125 for 17", 199 for 19" more then a year ago.

Best Buy usually has decent prices. I haven't bought a monitor from them though. The two I have are $100 ones from a local store.

everywhere else, newegg and tigerdirect have good prices. My refurb viewsonic from www.canadacomputers.com has not had any problems yet. SUN microsystems monitors are top quality, but get one with a SUN tube, not some cheap sony POS.
If your getting a SUN, make sure it has a VGA, or DVI-D connector.

19" samsung CRT from best buy for 179.99 after rebates was the best deal I found, this was a couple months ago. Also look for open box/display monitors at some local retailers. . .

Byte, check out CompUSA, KDS 19" @177, Best Buy MAG 19"@149.99, also take alook at WalMart.com, they have alot of good monitor prices. I recently bought a 13" LCD Spectre monitor for my son at walmart.com for only $222. That was with taxes and shipping. thorlo6

Best Buy. Circuit City. CompUSA. Anywhere around there - I got my monitor from BestBuy. I sometimes just order from Newegg, as the shipping fees counterbalance the already low prices they have on the item.

I recently boght a 17inch from best buy for $110 (No rebates!)

and that was the best monitor deal i was able to find anywhere on the net or local.

and i bought it on best buys website, so it got shipped to me. (but there was no shipping charge, they did charge for taxes)

i bought a 19" Samsung 955DF from Microcenter for $180 after a $20 instant rebate. they normally sell for about $200.

i always buy monitors locally for a few reasons:

1) shipping - costs $$ to ship (obviously) but also it gives the shipping company another opportunity to kick it, drop it, throw it, dent it, smash it etc. (remember monitors ship like this: manuf --> container --> ship --> warehouse -->truck --> distributor -->warehouse --> truck --> reseller -->shipper --> truck --> my house...if i can cut one of those out of the loop you have 1 less chance of shipping error)

2) if its bad i have to reverse the process and its another 2-7 days w/o a shiny new monitor - local I drop it off and pick up a new one.

3) comparison - I like to SEE what I am getting. Reviews are one thing but if I don't like the way it looks I don't want it.

4) problems - I can stand in the store and pitch a fit to get it resolved if need be (especially effective when they are busy and you throw around phrases like "don't stand behind what you sell")

5) immediate gratification - like it, buy it, take it home

6) did i mention shipping? I have to make sure that I am(or someone is) there to sign for it and get it in the house before the box evolves from a brown cardboard box to a four legged mobile creature that decides the guy next door has a nicer house than mine.

7) selection - I can see the box and reject one that looks like it just came from the olympic monitor kicking finals.

Thats if you buy something made overseas. If you get a quality american made product, you will have less problems with shipping.

the only monitors that I know of that is made in the US are certain IBM ones...but even then they are made with overseas components and assembled here.

I bought my CTX PL-9 from Sam's Club 2 years ago for $150. One of the best cheap 19 inchers I've seen yet. Warranty was only 1 year carryin though, can't have everything. Running at 1280x1024, 85 Hz. Sam's seems to have Samsung/Samtrons and NEC/Mitsubishis these days, both decent brands.

I think my best buy was my used monitor. It's a 17" Viewsonic CRT that I got used for $60. It's worked great for about 2 years now, and my favorite thing is that it gets a perfect black. Some monitors just can't give you a perfect black when they're turned on, even after you mess with the brightness settings, and that really bugs me for some reason. My new Viewsonic which I bought off Newegg for $154 w/ shipping has some nice features- flat screen, and Ultrabrite settings for movies and such that come in handy; but it doesn't have the same perfect black that my used monitor does, and it also cost 2.5 times as much.

I think in the future I'll go used. Even with the chance that it will break sooner, and mine hasn't, the price difference is so great that it will still be affordable to just get another one.

I got mine from Newegg. It is a Viewsonic VP201b 20.1 " LCD. It wasn't cheap either. At the time I got it, it was $939.00 I get almost all my stuff from Newegg, although I also check out Allstarshop.com now and again.
