I haven't been around for a while, but xp's service pack 2 and a major crash of my own brought me back. Anyways I repaired my system
but here is a story I am stuck on:A friend of mine recently bought a pc from a local parts store. I offered to build it but was on holidays so they got the store to do it. When I was using this computer I noticed immediately that it was extrememly noisy, even when idling. When I opened the case I found it had only 1) the PSU fan and 2) CPU fan. I noticed another vent on the underside of the powersupply that may have been another fan but I did not investigate. Anyways the point is it is comparible in sound to my build, which contains an additional gpu fan, and 2 80mm chassis fans (and is in a very cheap case I might add). Since the build was so new I don't suspect dust is making it so loud. I really don't know. Also when placing my hand behind the rear psu vent the exhaust was warm to touch, and I know mine moves fairly cool air. I could not find a temp monitor installed, maybe the mobo doesn't support (asus p4r800-vm). The owners of the machine returned to the store to complain about this and they were told a) it was relatively quiet compared to most pcs they work on; and b) the heat was probably just because the back was too close to the wall (it was about 8" away where it was setup). I thought this was stupid, especially since I have seen basically silent builds, and this thing was not quiet. It bugs me since I like the store it came from, and I buy most of my hardware there. Sorry for complaining here... but do you guys thing the service rep was out of line? What else can I do to reduce noise (not totally sure if it was the ps fan but I doubt it was the cpu cooler..) Would a well placed chassis fan possibly fix the problem? And does that motherboard have temp monitors (being Asus I assumed it did) Thanks for the great advice, like always pcmech!

You should be able to look at temps in bios. Or you could download Asus Probe from their site. As for the noise, maybe a fan is going out and thats why it is loud.

Maybe the fans are low quality. They could be sleeve bearing types, they are loud compared to the ball bearing types
