What would you do?

Ok peep this folks... I was over at the alienware site just customizing a gaming pc ... fantasizing about how it would be cool if I had it ... and I just realized that for the same budget that I have now, I can get a custom system from Alienware and get some parts in that PC that I can't get now, like the ATI X800 XT PCI-E graphics card. Now what would you do? Do you build your own, or buy an alienware?

Depends on what parts you will need to downgrade with the Alienware. I never shy myself from recommending a Dell or Alienware so if it's good, it may be meriticious of a purchase .

Three questions for ya...

1. To get the same or near to the same price of a custom built machine will you have to downgrade the AlienWare?

2. Does the AlienWare lack expansion?

3. Is any part of the AlienWare PC proprietary; This would include any preinstalled software?

If you answer yes to any of these three questions then you should build your own.

2. No

3. No

Alienware's are not at all proprietary - my first gaming PC was an Alienware, and it evolved more than a few times before I finally made a clean break and built a new rig. They used industry-standard components in all parts of the machine.

Never pay more for a name brand computer that you could build cheaper with the same or similar parts.

I'd suggest building.

Hate to burst your bubble, but PCI-E brings no performance increase over AGP, at all. What specs do you want the computer to have?

I can't agree with you on that, just can't... as for the other specs a 3.0Ghz P4 Processor, 1GB dual channel ram, 80/120GB hard drive, a dvd rom, cd writer, and a premier sound card.
