Angry Fire Interesting Info about Newegg.com

I'm writing this because I have no other outlet to vent my frustrations.

I purchased the SOYO Dragon 2 board from Newegg.com that was supposed to be free. They posted as Free on their site when I was buying it, and I could even get the rebate forms. That was on 8/26.

Shortly thereafter, they pulled the rebate form off their site. I called Newegg and SOYO. Both said the other was responsible. Then, like magic, the next day the rebate was back on their site. One catch though. You had to have purchased the board after 9/2 to get the new rebate. Not a good deal since I was the owner of a board purchased on 8/26.

So I call up Newegg.com. The representative says I can RMA the old board, pay a restocking fee, then buy and new board and get the rebate. Not worth it. Was there any other option? Not according to the rep. So, being as industrious as I am, I go back to my pc and dig up the old form I had looked at prior to receiving my board. Guess what?

It wasn't the same as the new rebate. It's date had the correct date to allow me to get the full rebate, making my board free. So what I would like to know is, am I going to get my rebate even though I got the cold shoulder from Newegg.com? SOYO services the rebate. Will they honor my form that I have from the original day I purchased it? Why would Newegg.com advertise a board as FREE if it wasn't? Answer: Cha-ching! Money. Not a good way to treat a person who has bought over $1000 of stuff off your site in the last couple years.

Anyone else buy this board and not find the right rebate? I will email it to you if you send me an mail at piccolo0u812@yahoo.com.

BTW, you can get the same offer now, with the new rebate. It's still good for a day or two I think.

I think I'd have to see the original page and check for the "fine print." The page I'm looking at right now shows the very standard type of rebate information:

$75 BEFORE the $75 mail in rebate.

Also, it is Not newegg (or normally any store, Web or brick-n-mortar) that *honors* a rebate, it is the company offering it. Which would be Soyo in this case.

The rebate form on my screen clearly states that it gets mailed to Soyo, Not Newegg.

It was probably a miscommunication or timing snafu. It happens from time to time and the company may be trying to cover their mistake. Not in the evil corporation way but just in the let's try not to lose money way (which I can understand b/c things like this happen to me in my business from time to time). If your claim is legit and you press them on it they will probably give in. If you think about it though their offer is still not bad. Shipping and restocking probably adds up to about 15 bucks then you can reorder the 75 dollar board. You are still getting it for 15 bucks total.

I can care less what it says now. I have the form for the original rebate they put up there, then they removed it. I called them, and they said I was SOL with the current form.

Point here is they offered a rebate, then basically hid/retracted it. If anyone out there is holding on to a board they bought and have no rebate form, let me know. The new form covers all purchased after 9/2, I have a form for 8/26 to 9/1! That's the point!

I feel for you. I saw that 'deal' as I was ordering some other stuff, and I had a fleeting thought of taking them up on it, and selling the board. I had a feeling I'd get screwed on the back-end, so I passed it up. Looks like I made the right choice.

All is well now, but those who jumped on the intial "free" offer are going to be out 40 bucks. I have no need for this board other than it was free. Spending 15 or 20 to get my 40 dollar rebate would be silly. But that's the exact response I got from one of the reps.

I will submit the older form (which you can distiguish from the new form as it has a typo) and see what happens I guess.

If you have a form and purchased the mobo in the dates on the form, then you should contact Soyo and see what they say. It is their rebate.

If you have the rebate form can't you send it in? Why does it matter if it's not on the website anymore? If the rebate was only a one day thing then it was supposed to dissapear from the website. If you didn't print the rebate form in time it is not their problem.

i kind of doubt this. THese types of rebate offers have dates when the rebate expires. my guess is you bought yours the day before it expired, explaining why the next day the offer was gone. and then a new rebate was offered the next day.

back in may i bought a soyo board for $50 with a $50 rebate, and i bought it the day it all expired, and i had to download and print off the rebate forms on that day, cause they disapeard the next. (this is not from newegg, this is straight form the soyo website where i bought it from).

its all about timing and reading the fine print. you most likely misread the ad or didnt read the fine print, always be careful about that kind of stuf with rebate offers.

You get what you pay for. They're giving it away free for a reason.

newegg.com still rocks despite your trials.

Hopefully everything works out for you and you get your board

not always the case, the soyo board I got for free works great. The reason they do the rebate thing is because it gets people to buy it, and then most people dont remember to send in the rebate anyway.

the downside is when you do send it in, it still takes some time to come back.

Keep us posted on the outcome. My guess is that Soyo will honor your original form, especially since the terms are the same. I'd also guess that jimmy is right: it's not uncommon for rebates to expire and then be followed by another with exactly the same terms, just with different start and end dates on the offer. Keeps things flexible for the manufacturers.

If you can't get either Newegg or Soyo to budge, you might also look into what, if any, buyer protection the credit card you used to order has. I know some credit cards include pretty nice consumer protection thingies.

One time one of my old teachers bought some kit online, and it was different, and not as good, as what he had ordered and paid for. Emailing the seller produced little result, so he called his card issuer, and once they got involved the seller refunded the sale.

Good point, mattg2k4. Also, contacting the BBB can often help.
